Maryland Secures Series Win Over Michigan State With Wyche 1-Hitter

EAST LANSING, MI -  The Maryland softball team secured the series win over the Michigan State Spartans 8-0 on Saturday, scoring runs consecutively in six of seven innings played. Maryland continues its most successful season in conference play, moving to 14-5 in the Big Ten and 28-19 overall. The 28 wins are the most by a Maryland softball team since 2013, when Maryland was 31-25.

Courtney Wyche excelled in the circle for the Terps, allowing no runs and just one hit through seven full innings. Wyche struck out the first three batters she faced in both the first and fourth inning (four of the six in swinging fashion), totaling ten throughout the game. The junior pitcher moves to 13-5 on the season.

Jaeda McFarland and Michaela Jones each tallied three hits on the day, accounting for over half of the Terps' total hits (11). McFarland totaled three RBIs, followed by Taylor Okada with two, and Megan Mikami with one.

Breaking Down the Action
  • The Terps got on the board first in the top of the second after a pair of singles from Campbell Kline and Michaela Jones put runners on first and second. A  Ruby Butler HBP loaded the bases, and a following walk by Kiley Goff brought Kline home to put Maryland up 1-0
  • In the top of the third, a leadoff single from Jaeda McFarland set things in motion for Taylor Okada's triple to send her home and put the Terps up 2-0. The triple marked the first for Okada this season
  • Maryland continued their running streak into the top of the fourth with a leadoff double from Michaela Jones setting up the Terps' third run of the day after an RBI triple from Megan Mikami, marking the second triple of the game and her first of the season. McFarland brought things up 4-0 after a single to right field sent Mikami back in
  • In the following frame, a walk by Mackense Greico put the Terps on base to start out the inning. Kamryn Davis pinch ran, making it all the way back around after stealing second and coming home on an error by the Michigan State defense
  • The top of the sixth showed more action from Maryland, with a double from McFarland sending Butler and Goff home after walks put them on, putting the Terps up 7-0
  • In the final frame, a fielder's choice on Taylor Liguori brought Butler home to secure the Terps' win 8-0
