Four-Run Inning Lifts Terps to 5-4 Win At Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Nick Lorusso has been crushing baseballs for No. 23 Maryland baseball all season. With a .357 batting average in his debut season with the Terps, the two-way Villanova transfer has continued to find success on the diamond.

When it felt like Maryland (25-6) was breaking the game open in the 4th inning, Lorusso stepped into the batter's box with a couple on base and three runs home in the inning. The Monroe, Connecticut, native poked the ball so hard up the middle that the liner bounced off Minnesota (8-20) second baseman Boston Merila's glove and rolled into center field. Next think anyone knew, Luke Shliger was home with Maryland's fifth run of the ballgame.

That run proved to be the difference for the Terrapins on Saturday. The Golden Gophers' offense found some success as the game progressed, but Shliger's run on that error kept Maryland on top as it earned a 5-4 victory.

Ryan Ramsey made another quality start, surrendering just a run on two hits over five innings of work as he logged 104 pitches.

Andrew Johnson and Sean Heine got the Terps through the 6th, before Nigel Belgrave and David Falco Jr. finished it off.

Breaking Down The Action
  • Maryland broke the ice in the top of the 3rd, when Chris Alleyne scored on a wild pitch.
  • The Terps' offense broke through in the 4th inning, when they batted around and brought four runners across the plate. After Troy Schreffler Jr. led off the frame with a single, Kevin Keister drove him home with an RBI single. The line kept rolling from there, with Alleyne hitting a two-run single and Luke Shliger scoring on an error.
  • Minnesota got one back in the bottom of the 4th, with Otto Grimm driving in Drew Stahl. The Golden Gophers got another back in the 6th.
  • The Gophers added a couple more in the 7th to make it a tight 5-4 ballgame heading to the 8th.
  • David Falco Jr. slammed the door in the 8th and 9th, pulling off a four-out save to seal the victory.
