Top-Seeded Terps Walk-Off Indiana In B1G Tourney Opener, 6-5

OMAHA, NE -- Top-seeded and eighth-ranked Maryland walked off its Big Ten Tournament opener with a 6-5 victory over Indiana at Charles Schwab Field in 11 innings. The Terps (45-10 overall) won their eighth game in a row and advance to play No. 5 seen Michigan, on Friday at approximately 10 p.m. ET/9 p.m. CT. Maryland is now 27-5 in its last 32 games to stand No. 3 in the RPI. The game took 4:17 to play. 

Ian Petrutz got hit by a pitch to drive in Matt Shaw in the bottom of the 11th for the Terps' fourth walk-off win this season and setting off a Maryland celebration. Shaw doubled to right to lead off the inning then Troy Schreffler Jr. had an infield hit to set up runners on first and third. Then Maxwell Costes was hit with a pitch, setting the stage for the win. 

After Indiana took a 5-4 lead in the top of the 10th, Petrutz drove in Bobby Zmarzlak to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. Schreffler had a key outfield assist as he gunned down a runner in the top of the 11th keeping the game tied at 5-5. 

Big Ten Player of the Year Chris Alleyne went 2-for-5 with an RBI, increasing his Big Ten-best total to 74. The Terps other runs were driven in by Nick Lorusso,  Zmarzlak and Kevin Keister. 

Zmarzlak (2-for-4), Luke Shliger (2-for-5), Schreffler Jr. (3-for-6) and Costes (2-for-5) all had multiple hits in the game.

The Terps had a stadium and Big Ten Tournament record nine doubles in the game. 

Starting pitcher Jason Savacool threw 6.2 innings, allowed six hits and four runs. He struck out eight batters and walked one. David Falco came on in relief and threw 2.2 innings, allowing a hit and a run.  Nigel Belgrave got the win with 1.2 innings of scorless ball. 

Indiana reliever Reese Sharp threw 5.1 innings out of the bullpen and struck out nine, allowing just five hits. Phillip Glasser drove in two runs and Carter Mathison hit a solo home run. 

Breaking Down The Action
• Maryland took a 1-0 lead on Lorusso's single to left scoring  Shliger in the bottom of the first inning. 
• The Terps scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to four doubles to go ahead 4-0 Zmarzlak doubled in  Schreffler, then  Keister doubled in Zmarzlak, which was followed by  Alleyne's bloop double to scored Keister. 
• Indiana got on the board in the sixth as the Hoosiers took advantage of an error to make it 4-1. 
• The Hoosiers tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the seventh inning. Mathison led off the inning with a solo homer. Indiana scored its third run on a balk, then Glasser's RBI single to right scored Tyler Doanes with two outs. 
• Indiana took a 5-4 lead in the top of the 10th as Evan Goforth scored on a fielder's choice hit by Hunter Jessee as Costes threw the ball home, but Goforth slide in ahead of the tag. The Terps escaped further damage in the inning with a double play. 
•  Petrutz' single to right brought home Zmarzlak to tie the game with no outs, making it 5-5, in the 10th, but the Terps couldn't plate another in the inning. 
• In the top of the 11th, Schreffler threw out Matthew Ellis at home plate as Indiana was trying to take the lead on a single to right by Tyler Doanes, giving Maryland two outs and keeping the score at 5-5. The play was review and the umpires confirmed the runner was out. 
• Petrutz was credited with his second RBI in extra innings as he was hit by a pitch to score the winning run as Shaw came home.

• 1: Maryland played its first extra-inning game in the Big Ten Tournament in history. 
• 3: Maryland is now 3-1 in extra-inning games this season.
• 4: This was Maryland's fourth walk-off win this season (2/23 (UMBC), 3/11 (GTown), 4/15 (OSU).

• 66: Costes has now been hit by 66 pitches in his career, second  most all-time in Maryland baseball history behind Kyle Convissar's 67, set between 2011-14.  
• 72: Luke Shliger added to his school record for runs scored in a season, as he now has 72. 
• 74: Alleyne has 74 RBIs, making him the third Terp with 70 or more RBIs in a season behind Hacopian (83 in 1992) and John McCurdy (77 in 2002).
• 117: Savacool struck out eight batters in the game and now has 117 on the season. That's the fifth-most in a season in Maryland history. Next at No. 4 is Eric Milton (118 in 1996).
