COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 20 Maryland men's soccer team defeated American, 2-0, in its second tune up match for the 2022 regular season Saturday night.
The Terps, who drew VCU 1-1 in a closed door affair Friday night in Richmond, got second half goals from
Hunter George and
Max Riley to defeat Eagles, who advanced to the Patriot League title game last season. Head coach
Sasho Cirovski featured his full compliment of available players, and the Terps will have one more exhibition match against Marshall next Friday at Ludwig Field.Â
"It's a good, really nice blend of hungry, returning, mature talent and a lot of youthful energy and ability," head coach
Sasho Cirovski said. "We treated the scrimmages a little bit more like training exercises, and to really evaluate some of the players' qualities against a different opponent. When we play Marshall on Friday, we'll put together what we feel might be our strongest lineup at this point, and we'll get a rotation going in that game that looks good."
After a first 45 minutes in which the balance of the play slightly favored Maryland, the Terps jumped on American after the halftime break. The control of proceedings led to George's goal in the 50th minute.
Isaac Ngobu got to into the attack from his left back position and fired in a left footed cross to the back post that George put in with a headed finish.
Riley finished the game off late. George served a free kick in that
William Kulvik headed back into the middle from the back post. Riley was able to turn the ball into the goal with his right foot and notch his first tally at Ludwig Field.
The Terps are back in exhibition action next week against 2020 National Champion Marshall. The Terps open the season against New Hampshire on 8/25 at Ludwig Field.
