Maryland Drops Road Matchup At No. 23 Wisconsin, 2-1

MADISON, Wis. -- The Terps (2-2-5, 1-3-0) battled hard against No. 23 Wisconsin (9-1-2, 4-0), taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, before the Badgers eventually pulled away for a 2-1 victory.

Alina Stahl scored the opening goal ten minutes into the game thanks to an aggressive push through multiple Wisconsin defenders. The Terp defense was strong all game, but especially in the first half where they held the Badgers without a shot on goal.

The Terps out-shot Wisconsin 6-5 in a defensive battle, with the Terps putting five of those shots on goal.

Breaking Down The Action
  • The Terps struck first in the 10th minute. Aggressive play by Mia Isaac created a takeaway and Issac pushed it ahead to Stahl who converted through a handful of Badger defenders.
  • Stahl created a couple more opportunities to keep pressure on the Badger defense.
  • Maryland executed a defensive clinic in the first half, holding the Badgers to just one shot overall and no shots on goal.
  • The Badgers equalized in the 51st minute, scoring off a penalty corner set piece.
  • Not backing down after the Badgers tied it, Alyssa Poarch put a well-taken volley on goal, forcing Wisconsin to come up with the save.
  • In the 65th minute, a Natalie Viggiano goal put Wisconsin on top.
  • The Terps had a couple of prime opportunities in the final 20 minutes, but weren't able to find the back of the net. Their best chance came off a corner in the 88th minute that resulted in a scramble in front of the net where Stahl had a chance to knock it through.

Up Next
  • The Terps will return home and host Michigan State at Ludwig Field on Sunday at 1 pm. That game will air on Big Ten Plus.
