Terps Top Navy, 3-0, In Final Home Match of 2023

Box Score COLLEGE PARK, MD -- In the final home match of the Maryland men's soccer season, the Terps prevailed in non-conference action against in-state rival Navy, 3-0.
 
After the contest was locked in a scoreless draw at halftime, Maryland went on an offensive barrage early in the second half, utilizing goals from Luke Van Heukelum and Max Riley within three minutes of each other to take a two-goal lead. Riley then added a brace in the final 15 minutes to propel the Terps to their fourth victory of 2023.
 
Freshman keeper Saxon Wolcott earned his first career starting nod, earning the victory while saving both of Navy's shots on net in the contest.

  • Navy had a prime opportunity to get on the board first on a set piece, though a Bryce Robisch header sailed high of the crossbar.
  • The Midshipmen peppered the Terps with five shots in the opening 20 minutes, though none were on target.
  • Henrik Sakshaug recorded Maryland's first shot of the match, though it went out for a Navy goal kick.
  • Maryland received its first attempt on goal of the contest from Luke Van Heukelum in the 36th minute, but Pierce Holbrook turned the shot away.
  • Saxon Wolcott stopped a shot by AJ Schuetz late in the first half, maintaining the scoreless draw heading into halftime.
  • The Terps vaulted into the lead in the 54th minute, as Van Heukelum converted a cross from Kimani Stewart-Baynes.
  • Max Riley doubled Maryland's lead just four minutes later, burying a right-footed shot from inside the penalty box off assists from Stewart-Baynes and Van Heukelum.
  • Maryland almost added a third goal on a shot from Stewart-Baynes, but the Navy keeper parried the shot away.
  • The Terps added their third tally on a set piece, with Riley adding a brace on a corner kick from Leon Koehl in the 77th minute.
