Q&A with Shyanne Sellers

UMTerps.com sat down with Maryland Women's Basketball's Shyanne Sellers get to know her on and off the court. Check out her answers below as she gears up for the season.

Tell us about your most memorable or favorite moment that you have had with Maryland Women's Basketball?
This past season when we beat Iowa at home and Brinae [Alexander] went crazy. Also the Purdue buzzer beater.

Reflecting on last season, what are some things you wish to improve on as a team? What are some positives you wish to expand on?
Being better as a collective on defense. And by the end of last season we got better at sharing the ball, which we can expand on this year - just playing together.

What is your favorite extracurricular activity to do on or around campus? When you aren't training or studying, where could we find you?
I can't say Chick-Fil-A because the coaches are going to get mad, but I like to go to different games and sporting events here. Otherwise, you can find me in my bed or playing Xbox.

What do you value most about being part of this basketball program? How has it positively impacted your college experience?
When seniors leave, they always come back. I'm still close with Diamond [Miller] - we talk regularly. I think it's positively impacted me by keeping me grounded. And for the ones that have gone pro, getting some insight into what I should be looking forward to.

Outside of basketball and academics, what would be your reason for an incoming freshmen to come here?
No matter what you do, even if you don't play a sport, it's just a good time.

What is your favorite thing about Coach Frese?
She'll coach you really hard and then love you really hard after.

If you had to guess, what would you say you're known for on the team?
Smiling a lot and making people laugh.

Are there any professional players that you look up to or try to emulate in your playing style?
When I was younger, it was a lot of Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi. And now I try to make my own game, but I do steal things from Abby [Meyers] and Diamond [Miller].

Outside of basketball, what are your hobbies and interests?
I like playing Xbox, I like shopping, and I like to paint sometimes. I also like interior design - I change up my apartment from time to time.

Do you have any pre-game rituals or superstitions that you follow? Any unusual ones?
Absolutely. Coach B will be the first to tell you that. I always put my left leg in my shorts first. And then, spandex, sports bra, shorts, then jersey last. I also eat the same breakfast every game day. So those are just a few.

Do you have any funny or interesting nicknames that your previous teammates or friends have given you? How did they come about?
My teammates call me Shy Glizzy. Also get called Noodles.

If you had to choose one basketball player, past or present, to be your teammate in a 2-on-2 tournament, who would it be and why?
Alyssa Thomas hands down. And she's a tank, she's gonna go through everybody

If you were to organize a team bonding activity or event, what would it be and why?
Probably flag football - I think that's fun and competitive.

Are there any unusual or unique skills or talents you have off the basketball court that people might not know about?
I'm double jointed.
