Terps Edged Out By Davidson 64-61 In Asheville Championship Opener

Box Score ASHEVILLE, NC -- A tough shooting night in the Asheville Championship Tournament opener proved too much to overcome as Maryland fell to Davidson, 64-61, at the Harrah's Cherokee Center. The Terps will next play UAB game on Sunday at 12:30 on ESPN2.

Jahmir Young led the Terps (1-1) with 18 points and seven assists as he reached 2,000 for his career spanning three years at Charlotte and his second with the Terps. He also picked up two rebounds to give him 626 rebounds and his seven assists give him 377 for his career. He is the only active player in the NCAA to have 2,000 career points, 600+ rebounds, and 350+ assists. Young is the second-leading active scorer in the nation behind only Max Abmas of Texas (2,574). 

Julian Reese added 16 points and 11 rebounds for his 8th career double-double.

Maryland shot 20-of-57 from the floor, while Davidson hit 21-of-49 including 8-of 15 from three-point range.

Breaking Down The Action
  • Maryland took the early lead in the first five minutes of play, but a 10-0 run sparked by a pair triples for Davidson put the Wildcats up 15-9 at the 11:45 mark of the first half.  
  • After Davidson extended the lead to as many as eight, back-to-back buckets by Reese and Young (off an inbounds steal) pulled Maryland back within four, 22-18 three minutes later.
  • A 7-0 run with a pair of Reese buckets followed by a transition triple from Young gave Maryland a 25-24 lead with 5:23 left in the first half.

  • Maryland had an opportunity to even the game on a three by Noah Batchelor that did not go down, but DeShawn Harris-Smith grabbed the offensive board and a jump ball gave the Terps a second chance.
  • The Terps were not able to get another shot off, as they came up short to Davidson by a score 64-61.

  • The second-leading active scorer in the NCAA, Jahmir Young surpassed 2,000 career points in the game after scoring 18 to give him 2,004. Young scored 1,421 points in his three years at Charlotte and now has 583 in his second year at Maryland.
  • Young is the only active player in the NCAA to have 2,000 career points, 600+ rebounds, and 350+ assists.
