Terps Take On UCLA Friday Night In Pauley Pavilion

COLLEGE PARK, MD - The Terps take to the road for the first time in three weeks as Maryland heads to UCLA on Friday night. The game will tip at 6:00 PM (PT) / 9:00 PM (ET) and will be televised on ESPN2. Fans can listen to the game on the Maryland Sports Radio Network with Voice of the Terps Johnny Holliday calling the action alongside Chris Knoche.

The game will be a re-match of last year's meeting in the XFINITY Center and marks the 50th anniversary of the first-ever game between the two schools in December 1973.

 
Terps Look To Take Win Streak On Rare West Coast Road Trip
  • The Terps won their third straight and sixth in the last seven outings on Tuesday night against Nicholls. Jahmir Young led the way with his first double double of the year (23 points, 11 rebounds), while Donta Scott had 15 points in one of his best outings of the season. Maryland blocked 13 shots, led by 6 from Julian Reese, for their most in a game since 2018.
  • Jahmir Young leads Maryland with 17.7 points per game along with 4.2 assists and 4.0 rebounds. Julian Reese is now averaging a double-double with 15.2 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.
  • The last time the Terps played on the West Coast came in the 2016 NCAA Tournament First and Second Rounds as Maryland beat South Dakota State and Hawaii in Spokane, Washington on March 18 and 20, 2016. 
  • The last time Maryland played a regular-season game on the West Coast was on Dec. 9, 1995 when the Terps dropped a 73-63 decision to UCLA in the John Wooden Classic in Anaheim, California. 
  • The last time Maryland played a true road game in California or on the West Coast was on Dec. 29, 1982, a 90-57 loss at UCLA. 
  • The last time Maryland played in the state of California came as the Terps won the 2001 NCAA West Regional in Anaheim, beating Georgetown and Stanford (March 22 & 24) advancing to the Final Four for the first time in program history.
  • The Terps have won four of their last five games in the state of California, winning those two games in the 2001 NCAA Tournament and two NCAA Tournament games in Sacramento in 1998 followed by a loss in the NCAA Regional Semifinal in Anaheim.

  • After a standout season in 2022-23, Jahmir Young, one of the top point guards in the country, has racked up the preseason accolades. He has been named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 and is a member of the Bob Cousy Award Watch List as well. Young was also a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team, the first unanimous pick for Maryland since Cowan in 2019.  
  • Additionally, Young picked up Preseason All-America honors from Blue Ribbon and Lindy's, while The Field of 68 had him on the All-Big Ten Preseason Team and ranked him as the No. 35 of 100 top players nationally entering 2023-24.
  • Last season, Young was a second team All-Big Ten selection, was named to the USBWA All-District Team, and selected to the NABC All-District Second Team. Additionally, he was chosen as the Pigskin Club of Washington Collegiate Player of the Year.
  • Young is looking to become just the sixth NCAA player since 2006 to post 1,000 points at two different institutions during his career. Prior to the the extra year of eligibity due to COVID-19, only three players had achieved the feat in the past 20 years. Young's 2,169 career points ranks 2nd among active players in the NCAA behind Max Abmas of Texas (2,740 pts).
  • Young leads the Terps having scored in all 131 career games played. Only six times has he been held under 5 points in that stretch. Overall, Young has 116 double-figure scoring games with 46 20-point efforts.
  • Young's 46 20-point games are the most among all active Big Ten players.

  • After a breakout sophomore campaign that saw Julian Reese become one of the top big men in the Big Ten, the Baltimore native enters 2023-24 with high praise. Reese joined Jahmir Young on the Preseason All-Big Ten Team and was named to the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award Watch List.
  • Reese showed his impact for the Terps in 2022-23 as he scored in double-figures in 22 games with a career-high 24 points against Coppin State. He had seven double-doubles on the year including 17 points, 12 rebounds at Ohio State.
  • Had one of his best league outings going toe-to-toe with Purdue's Big Ten Player of the Year Zach Edey where Reese scored 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting while adding three rebounds and committing zero turnovers.
  • Reese finished 2022-23 tied for second on the team in scoring at 11.4 points and led the Terps in rebounds (7.2).
  • In two NCAA Tournament games last year, Reese averaged 15.5 points against West Virginia and No. 1 Alabama.
  • His 63.2 field goal percentage last season stands as the third-best mark in Maryland program history for a single season.

Julian Reese tied his career high with 24 points while pulling down 15 boards against Penn State for his fifth double double of the year.

  • Donta Scott became the 59th player in program history to reach 1,000 points last season. Through 11 games this year, he now has 1,420 points and 760 rebounds. He is also the 17th Terp to post 1,300 points and 600 rebounds in a career. 
  • Darryl Morsell (1,090 points / 510 rebounds / 2018-21) and Anthony Cowan (1,881 points / 508 rebounds / 2017-20) were the most recent Terps to post 1,000/500.
  • Scott is now 22nd all-time in scoring and needs 17 points to move past Jake Layman (1436, 2003-08) for 21st. He needs 22 more boards to pass Ekene Ibekwe (781, 2003-07) for No. 11 all-time and 24 to reach the top-10 overall.
  • Additionally, thanks to his fifth season, Scott (140 GP - 3rd most, 125 GS - 4th most, 4064 MIN - 8th most) will have a chance to set Maryland's games played record (141, Jake Layman, 2012-16), the games started record (136, Steve Blake, 1999-03), and minutes played record (4568, Greivis Vasquez, 2006-10).
