SWEET 16: Terps Win 16th In A Row At Home, Beat Penn State In Overtime, 81-75

Box Score COLLEGE PARK, MD -- The Terps won their first conference game of the season and 16th straight at XFINITY Center in thrilling fashion, edging Big Ten foe Penn State 81-75 in overtime.

Penn State's Ace Baldwin Jr. knocked down a pair of free throws with 4.1 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime. However, Maryland scored the first five points of the overtime period and held the Nittany Lions without any points for the first 3:15.

DeShawn Harris-Smith converted a tough and-one in the paint with 29.5 seconds left to put Maryland ahead 79-75 and seal the victory for the Terps. Maryland held Penn State to 0-of-8 field goals in overtime.
Julian Reese (a career-high tying 24 points,15 rebounds) had his fifth double-double of the season and fourth in the last five games. Young added 28 points and eight rebounds and was a perfect 12-for-12 at the line. Jamie Kaiser Jr. scored a career-high 10 points, including a pair of triples.

Led by Reese's 15 attempts, the Terps took 39 trips to the free throw line, with 28 coming in the second half and overtime. Maryland finished at a 797 percent clip, including making 23-of-28 in the second half and overtime.

The Terps grabbed 23 offensive rebounds as a team, led by six from Reese.

Maryland moves to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten while Penn State drops to 4-5 and 0-1, respectively.
Coach Willard's Takes

"I think Julian Reese is really developing into a leader. He was the one, when we went into overtime, really talking, saying, 'Let's go, we got five more minutes, let's figure this out and find a way.'"

"I'm more excited about those two (DeShawn Harris-Smith and Jamie Kaiser) now than I was when they first committed. Their work ethic, their effort, their attitude. Jamie's energy was awesome. DeShawn had to defend Ace Baldwin Jr. all night. That's not an easy thing to do as a freshman. They're both working hard, they're both doing really good things."

From The Guys

"It just shows our growth," Young said of the win. "We were down 10 early, and we walked it down and just grinded. No one put their head down, nobody pouted. It was good to come back and get that win and it was good to get our first win in conference play."

"It's really just effort," Reese said of the team's 23 offensive rebounds. "It's just attacking the glass hard, and wanting it more than our opponents. We got after it in the first half when shots weren't falling. And if shots aren't falling but we keep attacking the glass, it won't really matter."

"When it comes to basketball, good things happen when you play hard," Kaiser said. "I just tried to carry over the energy I had in the second half against Indiana and bring it into this game, knowing that stuff was going to go a little bit more our way. I just tried to play hard and knew good things would happen."
