No. 2 Terps Drop Decision At No. 4 Syracuse

SYRACUSE, NYNo. 2 Maryland suffered a 20-11 defeat to No. 4 Syracuse at the JMA Wireless Dome on Friday afternoon. The Terps are now 1-1 and the Orange are 2-0. 

Hannah Leubecker, Jordyn Lipkin and Libby May each scored scored two goals for the Terps. Eloise Clevenger had a three-point game on a goal and two assists. 

Kori Edmondson scored her first collegiate goal, coming in the fourth quarter. 

Syracuse was led by Meaghan Tyrrell, who had 11 points on six goals and five assists. In goal, Delaney Sweitzer made 13 saves. 


Breaking Down The Action
  • Syracuse jumped out to a 6-2 lead early in the first quarter with Meaghan Tyrell scoring three goals in the run. The Terps answered with three goals in 50 seconds with Shaylan Ahearn, Lipkin and Shannon Smith scoring in the final 1:12 of the quarter for a 6-5 score at halftime. 
  • The Orange scored the first three goals of the second quarter to go ahead 9-5 before Victoria Hensh broke the run to make it 9-6. The Orange added two more before halftime for an 11-6 edge at intermission
  • Syracuse outscored the Terps 5-2 in the third quarter. Leubecker and Emma Muchnick each scored for the Terps in the period as they trailed 16-8 after three quarters. 
  • Lipkin added her second goal of the game to open the fourth quarter scoring. Edmondson and May scored as well. 


Multi-Goal Games
  • Leubecker had her 33rd career multi-goal game. All of those 33 games have come over her last 40 college games. 
  • May netted multiple goals for the 31st time in her career. 
  • Lipkin, who had a hat trick in the opener, had her ninth career multi-goal game. 


50th Season Of Lacrosse
  • The 2023 season is the 50th season of Maryland women's lacrosse, a program that has been the most successful in the entire sport since its start. 
  • Maryland has won 15 national championships and 31 conference championships. The Terps have participated in 28 Final Fours, including 12 of the last 13 and have won 12 of the last 28 national championships, including seven-straight from 1995- 2001. Maryland now has an all-time program record of 762-148-3 in 50 seasons for a 83.7 win percentage.

  • Maryland continues its run of road games at Drexel on Tuesday at 2 p.m., in Philadelphia. The Terps then travel to Florida and James Madison before hosting Denver on March 5 at SECU Stadium.
