Dean’s Pitching, Lorusso’s Slam Lift No. 13 Terps To 8-1 Win At USF

TAMPA, FLNo. 13 Maryland (1-1) rolled to an 8-1 victory over South Florida (1-1) behind six shutout innings of one-hit ball from senior Nick Dean in his first outing of 2023 at USF Baseball Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Dean pitched six innings in his 2023 debut, striking out eight and walking just one, allowing just two baserunners.

Fifth-year Senior Nick Lorusso punished a ball to left center for a grand slam, marking back-to-back games with a grand slam to open 2023 for the Terps.

Sophomore Elijah Lambros followed up his strong debut with another quality performance going 1-2 at the plate with one RBI and two walks. Ian Petrutz and Eddie Hacopian each went 2-for-5.

Freshman Kyle McCoy made his debut for the Terps pitching the final three innings and allowing three hits with three strikeouts - in earning his first college save.

Pablo Ruiz drove in the Bulls (1-1) one run in the game.

Breaking Down The Action
  • The contest began as a pitchers duel with both teams recording just one hit through two innings.
  • The Terps broke through in the top of the third inning as Elijah Lambros and Matt Shaw both collected RBIs. This marks two consecutive games with an RBI for Lambros in his first season as a Terp.
  • Nick Dean tossed a strong 2023 debut, which included striking out seven batters through the first four to keep the Terps up two runs heading in the fifth inning.
  • The Terps were able to extend the lead as Bobby Zmarzlak opened the fifth inning with a triple and eventually crossed home plate after a wild pitch.
  • Maryland struck again in the seventh inning, extending the lead to seven as Nick Lorusso cleared the bases for the Terps' second grand slam in two games, putting the Terps up 7-0.
  • The Terps did not take their foot off the gas as Ian Petrutz hit a laser over the right fielder's head allowing Matt Shaw to advance into scoring position at third. Eddie Hacopian pushed Shaw across, notching his first RBI as a Terps, making it 8-1 in the ninth.

By The Numbers
  • 1: Matt Shaw broke through in the top of the third, collecting his first hit, double and RBI of the 2023 season.
