TAMPA, FL – No. 13 Maryland hit a grand slam for the third consecutive game as
Ian Petrutz' smash broke open the Terps' 9-5 victory over South Florida to capture the season-opening series.
Eddie Hacopian and
Matt Shaw also slugged home runs to power the Terps, who are 2-1 heading to a big series at Ole Miss next weekend.
On Sunday, Shaw went 5-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. The five hits set a new career-high for Shaw, it was the fourth time in his career he posted four hits in a game – with the other three coming last season. Petrutz went 2-for-4 with four RBI on the slam. Petrutz has two hits in each game this season.
Maryland's other hits came from Luke Shliger and Nick Lorusso.
On the mound, Nate Habertheir tossed five innings in his Maryland debut striking four, allowing just two runs. Nigel Belgrave come on in relief in the sixth and struck out two. Tommy Kane made his Terps and pitched the seventh with a strikeout. Kenny Lippman also made his debut and pitched the final two innings to record his first save as a Terp.
Jacob Orr hit a grand slam in the season opener on Friday night then Lorusso smacked a slam on Saturday preceeding Petrutz' slam on Sunday for the Terps.
With grand slams in three games in a row, for perspective, the Major League Baseball records for a team hitting grand slams in consecutive games is four by the San Diego Padres in the 2020 season. Prior to that, it was three – which is what Maryland has accomplished.

- The Bulls got three runs back in the bottom of the seventh inning thanks to a Drew Brutcher three-run homer which cut the Terp advantage to 8-5.
