No. 13 Terps Drop Series To No. 4 Ole Miss In Explosive 18-8 Game

Oxford, Miss. – No. 13 Maryland (3-4) got as close as 10-8 in the seventh, but a massive bottom of the seventh inning ended the game in mercy rule fashion as the Terps fell to No. 4 Ole Miss (6-1), 18-8, on Saturday afternoon at Swayze Field at Oxford-University Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi.

Maryland had a number of opportunities to come back after a seven-run third inning saw the Terps fall into an 8-2 hole. Three two-run homers for Maryland from that point on cut the deficit as Nick Lorusso's second two-run homer of the day and two-run homers from Elijah Lambros and Luke Shliger cut the deficit to 10-8 after Ole Miss scored two in the bottom of the fourth.

All 10 of the Terps' runs in the game were scored via home runs, with Lorusso leading the way with his two on the day, going 2-for-5 with four RBI. Shliger went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, a homer and two RBI. Eddie Hacopian and Bobby Zmarzlak each recorded two singles in the loss.

Ole Miss was powered by two seven-run innings in the win, the first one coming in the fourth inning as three Rebels hitters hit home runs, including three-run shots from Calvin Harris and TJ McCants.

Harris also punctuated the win with a grand slam in the seventh inning, his second homer of the day that highlighted an inning where the Rebels had three runs scored on bases-loaded free bases, two on walks and one a hit-by-pitch.

He led Ole Miss's offense in the win, going 4-for-5 with two homers and eight RBI, one of three Rebels hitters with multiple hits, five with multiple RBI and six with multiple runs scored.

Coach Vaughn's Take
"Really mature fight by our guys, I was really impressed by our offense. McCants got into one, watched it for a while and I get that it's part of our game now, [Luke] Shliger got into him a little bit, as he should, standing up for his guys. I talked to the team in-between innings and told them everything was handled right there, now we can't get emotional, and I thought we did a tremendous job of that. We went out and ran up a four spot and put ourselves right back in the game."

Breaking Down The Action
  • Gonzalez hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning for Ole Miss as Maryland went down early, 0-1.
  • Lorusso gave the Terps a lead in the top of the third with a two-run blast over the bullpens in left field, 2-1.
  • Ole Miss put up a seven-spot in the third thanks to three home runs, a solo shot from Chatagnier and two three run-blasts from Harris and McCants, 2-8.
  • Maryland cut into the deficit in the top of the fourth with a pair of two-run homers from Lambros and Lorusso, his second of the game, 6-8.
  • The Rebels tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fourth from a Calvin Harris RBI double and an Alderman RBI single, 6-10.
  • Shliger sent a two-run shot over the right field wall and into the student section, cutting into the deficit for Maryland in the fifth, 8-10.
  • Alderman extended the Ole Miss lead in the sixth with a solo homer, 8-11.
  • Flood gates opened for Rebels in the seventh with three-straight free bases in the seventh that lead to runs. Two bases-loaded walks and a bases-loaded HBP for Ole Miss, 8-14.
  • A grand slam from Harris ended the series in a mercy-rule win, his second of the day, 8-18.

By The Numbers
  • 2: Home runs hit by Lorusso in the game, a single-game career-high for the senior. Lorusso is the first Terp to hit two home runs in a single-game this season and the first Maryland player to do so since Chris Alleyne and Matt Shaw each hit two at Purdue to clinch the 2022 Big Ten Championship on May 20 of last year.
  • 3: Times Shliger was hit by a pitch during the series.
  • 4: The number of home runs hit by the Terps, their most since launching five over the fence against Wake Forest on June 5, 2022 at last season's College Park Regional.
  • 4: Number of players this season with multiple home runs for Maryland.

Up Next
  • The Terps will head back home to play Delaware at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 4 p.m. EST. The game will be broadcast on B1G+ and the Maryland Baseball Network.
