Savacool, Big Bats Blast Albany, 18-3, In Series Opener

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland won its sixth game in a row using a dominant Friday afternoon from Jason Savacool and RBI knocks from eight different players to give them an 18-3 win over UAlbany in the series-opening matchup. The Terps improved to 10-7 overall while the Great Danes are now 2-8-1.  

Jason Savacool dominated from the opening frame, earning his third win of the season. The junior threw seven shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out seven batters.

Three Terps hit homers in the win as Matt Woods went deep twice, giving him four homers in the last three games. He went 3-for-6 with four RBIs. 

Eddie Hacopian and Bobby Zmarzlak went back-to-back in the seventh inning to break open the game. Hacopian went 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Zmarzlak scored three runs while going 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Nick Lorusso extended his hitting streak to 16 games as he went 2-for-4 with four RBIs.  Eight of the Terps' starters had hits in the game. Matt Shaw drove in a pair. Luke Shliger went 2-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs.


Breaking Down The Action
  • The Terps struck first in the bottom of the second, as a  Lorusso stand up double into the right field gap scored Zmarzlak and Shaw to give Maryland an early 2-0 advantage.
  • A Woods solo home run into deep right center gave the Terps another run in the bottom of the third inning, giving them a 3-0 lead.
  • The following two frames were dominated by pitching as both teams produced scoreless innings, highlighted by Savacool's two strikeouts in the top of the sixth inning keeping the score 3-0 Terps.
  • The Terps added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth as  Shaw drove in two runs with a well placed double down the left field line, making it a 5-0 Maryland advantage.
  • Back-to-back solo home runs from Hacopian and  Zmarzlak over the right field fence gave the Terps a 7-0 lead heading in the bottom of the seventh inning.
  • The Terps added three more runs scoring twice on hit batters and a passed ball before Shliger doubled in a pair of runs for a 13-0 lead. Lorusso doubled in Shliger for the 14-0 score. Kevin Keister drove in Lorusso. Then Woods went deep for the second time to make it 18-0. 
  • Albany added two runs in the top of the ninth as Tyler Pugliese hit a two-run home run. Another scored on a single for the 18-3 final. 

By The Numbers 
  • 2: Hacopian and Zmarzlak went back-to-back as each of them hit their second homer of the season. 
  • 3: Woods' solo shot in the third inning marks three consecutive games with a home run for the outfielder. His homer in the eighth gave him four total blasts over the last three games. 
  • 3: Four different Terps scored three runs in the game: Lambros, Shliger, Woods and Zmarlak. 
  • 4: Lorusso had four RBIs in a game for the third time this season and Woods drove in four for the second time. Lorusso leads the Terps with 30 RBIs. 
  • 6: Woods extended his hitting streak to six games, sitting with a .458 average (11-of-23) with 13 RBIs in that stretch. 
  • 7: With his four RBI Nick Lorusso now has seven multi-RBI games through 17 games.
  • 7: Savacool had his second outing this season of seven innings withou allowing an earned run, as he also did it against Ole Miss on Feb. 24. 
  • 16: With his RBI double in the second inning Lorusso has hit safely in 16 consecutive games. 
  • 17: Keister has reached base safely in each of the Terps' 17 games this season.
  • 34: The Terps now have 34 home runs on the season.
