BLOOMINGTON, IN – No. 24 Maryland softball led 1-0 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning, but Indiana scored twice to rally for a dramatic 2-1 win in the Big Ten opener for both teams. The Terps were seeking their best start in program history, but fell to 22-6, equaling the mark of 2008. Indiana won its 13th game in a row and is now 20-9 overall.
Sarah Stone's single to rightfield brought how the winning run for the Hoosiers. Indiana had tied the game as Taylor Minnick was hit with a pitch with the bases loaded in the seventh.
Maryland took a 1-0 lead as Amelia Lech smashed her Big Ten-leading 10th home run leading off the sixth inning to break the scoreless deadlock. She took a full-count pitch over the leftfield fence to give the Terps a lead.
In the circle Courtney Wyche was masterful as she blanked Indiana for 5.2 innings, allowing just four hits and striking out two. She retired 10 batters in a row from the third to the sixth. As Indiana threatened in the sixth, the Terps' closer
Keira Bucher came on to get out of the jam in the sixth.
The Terps' other hits came from Megan Mikami, Kiley Goff, Jaeda McFarland and Sammi Woods.
The teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 10 a.m.
