COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 2 Maryland suffered a 16-11 defeat to Michigan on Saturday at SECU Stadium. Michigan scored the final five goals of the first quarter and held the lead for the remainder of the game.
Braden Erksa led the Terps with three goals for his second-career hat trick and and added an assist to equal his career-high in points with four points.
Daniel Maltz scored twice for Maryland.
Jack Brennan, Daniel Kelly, Kyle Long, Cayden Onagi and Ajax Zappitello scored goals for the Terps.
The Terps fell to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten while Michigan moved to 5-4 overall and is also 1-1 in the Big Ten.
Josh Zawada (three goals, four assists) and Michael Boehm (four goals and two assists) led the Wolverines on offense. Jacob Jackson also scored three goals for Michigan. Goale Shane Carr made five saves playing the first half and Taylor Hunter come on for the second half and made five saves.
Luke Wierman continued to move up the all-time charts in face-off wins with his 13-of-28 day moving him to third all-time in Maryland's lacrosse history with 530. He is also third all-time in groundballs with 283 after scooping seven in the game.
Breaking Down The Action
- Michigan led 6-2 after the first quarter as the Wolverines scored the final five goals of the first quarter from five different players. Kelly and Erksa scored early for the Terps.
- The Terps came out with two goals in a span of 21 seconds in the second quarter with tallies coming from Brennan and Maltz to make it 6-4. After Zawada make it 7-4 Michigan, Zappitello swept in a rebound to cut the deficit to two at 7-5 with 7:27 remaining. Long's bounce shot cut it to one at 7-6 with 2:56 left. The Wolverines led 7-6 at the half.
- Michigan opened te second half with three more goals to lead 10-6 just 1:44 into the half. Erksa ended the run with a tally less than 40 seconds later. Boehm scored with 2:02 left in the quarter to extend Michigan's advantage to 11-7. Erksa added his third goal of the game to make it 11-8 after three quarters.
- Maltz scored on an extra-man with 13:32 left for an 11-9 score. Michigan scored four in a row go up 15-9 with 6:14 left.
