Young's Layup With 1.7 Seconds Left Lifts Terps To 69-67 Win At Iowa

Box Score IOWA CITY, IA  Jahmir Young willed Maryland men's basketball to a, 69-67, victory at Iowa on Wednesday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Terrapins picked up their first road win against the Hawkeyes since pulling out a 66-65 decision on Feb. 19, 2019.
The Terps (12-8, 4-5 Big Ten) rallied back from a deficit as large as 10 late in the first half. Young led the comeback by scoring 17 points in the second half.

Young scored Maryland's final eight points including the game-winning layup with 1.7 seconds on the clock. He had hit three-pointers with 1:24 and 38 seconds left to put the Terps up each time. The Terps held Iowa without a field goal for the final 5:44 of the game.
Young (22 points), Julian Reese (17 points), and Donta Scott (14 points) all scored in double-figures. Reese grabbed nine rebounds along with five blocked shots.

Maryland won its first game decided by one possession this season after suffering a nation-leading five losses by three points or less. The win on a last-season field goal marks the first time that has happened for Maryland since Darryl Morsell hit a deep 3-pointer at Minnesota with one second remaining on Feb 26, 2020.
Maryland boasted the Big Ten's best defense (63.8 PPG), while Iowa (11-8, 3-5 B1G) featured the conference's best offense (86.1 PPG) entering the game. The Terps neutralized the potent Hawkeyes offense holding them to 3-of-14 shooting from beyond the arch.

Iowa (11-8, 3-5 B1G) has lost back-to-back after winning six of seven games over a month. Tony Perkins led the Hawkeyes with 20 points.

Breaking Down the Action
  • Donta Scott scored the first five points for the Terps, while Iowa scored its first 10 points in the paint with Tony Perkins leading the charge. The Hawkeyes held a narrow 11-7 advantage at the second media timeout.
  • Julian Reese and Jahari Long got on the board for the Terps with four and three points respectively. Iowa would continue its scoring in the paint with all eight of their field goals coming inside to take a 20-14 lead with 7:27 remaining in the first half
  • Threes by Jahmir Young and Jahari Long would lead the Terps, but eight straight points from Owen Freeman allowed Iowa to extend its lead to 32-24 at the final media timeout.
  • Scott led the Terps with seven points as they trailed Iowa 34-28 at halftime. Maryland held Iowa to 0-of-7 from the three-point range in the first half.
  • The Terps cut the deficit to one point after Young converted an and-one at the 13-minute mark of the second half. They took the lead after Reese grabbed an offensive rebound and scored a layup at the rim. Maryland led 46-45 for the first time since the opening three minutes of the game.
  • Reese would pace the Terps attack with nine of his 15 points in the second half. Both teams would trade leads, but a three-point basket would give Iowa a 55-52 at the under-eight timeout
  • A step-back three by Young gave the Terps a 64-63 lead with just over a minute left in the second half. After a pair of free throws for Iowa, Young would knock down another three to put the Terps back in front 67-65 with 30.8 seconds remaining. His layup with 1.7 seconds sealed the win.
Coach Willard's Take
[Jahmir] struggled a bit in the first half, but I told him that he was playing too hard and that it would all start to click. I think the big thing was he got fouled really hard on a layup and it made him mad. That woke him up a little bit and that last play of the game I told him the shot has to go up with two seconds. We were gonna give him a screen and give him space on that side to get a shot.

Jahmir Young on His Late Game Baskets and the Team's Effort

"The shot clock was going down and coach wanted the ball in my hands. I saw that they didn't pick me up off the ball screen. I'm pretty good pulling up to my right, I practice that shot so many times that at this point it's just second nature. I'm just proud of our unit and being able to bounce back. We lost a tough one at home, so for us to be able to come in here on the road and steal this one was great for our group. Coming in here we knew we had to fight and that was our mentality coming into this game".

  • Jahmir Young (22 points) dropped double-figures for the 124th time in his career and the 18th time in 19 games he's played this season.
