COLLEGE PARK, MD - The Terps return home to host Michigan on Thursday night at the XFINITY Center. The game will tip at 7 PM ET and will be televised on FS1. Fans can listen to the game on the Maryland Sports Radio Network with Voice of the Terps Johnny Holliday calling the action alongside Chris Knoche and Walt Williams. Maryland will be looking to snap a two-game skid with a victory on Thursday before heading out for back-to-back road games at No. 10 Illinois and at Northwestern.
Terps Look To Keep Home Court Advantage Strong
- Maryland's 24-2 home record between 2022-23 and 2023-24 ranks as the best home record in the Big Ten. It also is tied for 8th nationally for the most home wins.
- Home has been especially advantageous for the Terps this year as they have a +21.8 scoring difference compared to road/neutral games. Maryland is averaging 79.8 points at home and 58.0 points on the road.
- Maryland fell 65-62 on Sunday night at Minnesota despite 20 points from Jahmir Young and 14 points from both Julian Reese and Donta Scott. A season-high 17 turnovers (including 15 in the first half) hurt the Terps which led by as many as 11 midway through the opening stanza.
- Jahmir Young leads Maryland with a 19.9 point per game average followed by Julian Reese who is averaging 13.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Young is the fourth-leading scorer overall in the Big Ten.
The Terps defeated Michigan 64-58 last season in the XFINITY Center.
Fear The Jahmir
- After a standout season in 2022-23, Jahmir Young, one of the top point guards in the country, has racked up the preseason accolades. He has been named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 and is a member of the Bob Cousy Award Watch List as well. Young was also a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team, the first unanimous pick for Maryland since Cowan in 2019.
- Additionally, Young picked up Preseason All-America honors from Blue Ribbon and Lindy's, while The Field of 68 had him on the All-Big Ten Preseason Team and ranked him as the No. 35 of 100 top players nationally entering 2023-24.
- Last season, Young was a second team All-Big Ten selection, was named to the USBWA All-District Team, and selected to the NABC All-District Second Team. Additionally, he was chosen as the Pigskin Club of Washington Collegiate Player of the Year.
- Despite missing one game due to illness, Jahmir Young was one of the top scorers nationally in December. The fifth-year senior ranked 7th nationally with a 24.2 point per game average (the third-best average among Big Ten players). In five games played, Young shot 47.2% from the floor and 93.3% at the free throw line (42-of-45). Young also averaged 6.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists.
- Young notched four 20 point games including a career-high 37 points at UCLA - the fourth most points in a true road game in program history.
- Young is looking to become just the sixth NCAA player since 2006 to post 1,000 points at two different institutions during his career. Prior to the the extra year of eligibility due to COVID-19, only three players had achieved the feat in the past 20 years. Young's 2,252 career points ranks 2nd among active players in the NCAA behind Max Abmas of Texas (2,803 pts).
- Young leads the Terps having scored in all 134 career games played. Only six times has he been held under 5 points in that stretch. Overall, Young has 119 double-figure scoring games with 49 20-point efforts.
- Young's 49 20-point games are the most among all active Big Ten players.
Jahmir Young is a member of the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50, the Bob Cousy Watch List, and was a unanimous pick to the preseason All-B1G Team.
JuJu Beast
- After a breakout sophomore campaign that saw Julian Reese become one of the top big men in the Big Ten, the Baltimore native enters 2023-24 with high praise. Reese joined Jahmir Young on the Preseason All-Big Ten Team and was named to the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award Watch List.
- Reese showed his impact for the Terps in 2022-23 as he scored in double-figures in 22 games with a career-high 24 points against Coppin State. He had seven double-doubles on the year including 17 points, 12 rebounds at Ohio State.
- Had one of his best league outings going toe-to-toe with Purdue's Big Ten Player of the Year Zach Edey where Reese scored 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting while adding three rebounds and committing zero turnovers.
- Reese finished 2022-23 tied for second on the team in scoring at 11.4 points and led the Terps in rebounds (7.2).
- In two NCAA Tournament games last year, Reese averaged 15.5 points against West Virginia and No. 1 Alabama.
- His 63.2 field goal percentage last season stands as the third-best mark in Maryland program history for a single season.
Julian Reese has six double doubles this year after going for 18 points and 10 rebounds against Coppin State.
Great Scott!
- Donta Scott became the 59th player in program history to reach 1,000 points last season. Through 15 games this year, he now has 1,471 points and 781 rebounds. He is also the 17th Terp to post 1,400 points and 700 rebounds in a career.
- Darryl Morsell (1,090 points / 510 rebounds / 2018-21) and Anthony Cowan (1,881 points / 508 rebounds / 2017-20) were the most recent Terps to post 1,000/500.
- Scott is now 19th all-time in scoring and needs 91 points to move past Greg Manning (1561, 1977-81) for 18th. He needs three more boards to pass James Gist (783, 2004-08) for No. 10 all-time.
- Additionally, thanks to his fifth season, Scott (129 GS - 3rd most, 4190 MIN - 6th most) will have a chance to set Maryland's games started record (136, Steve Blake, 1999-03) and minutes played record (4568, Greivis Vasquez, 2006-10). He set the games played record (142) against Coppin State on Dec. 28.
Donta Scott continues to climb the all-time record lists for the Terps.
