Maryland Edged At Ohio State, 79-75, In Double OT

Box Score COLUMBUS, OH Maryland men's basketball led for much of the game, but in the end, Ohio State handed the Terps their seventh one-possession loss of the season, 79-75, in overtime on Saturday at Value City Arena.

Bruce Thornton's layup with 1:11 left in the second overtime put Ohio State ahead for good in handing Maryland (13-11, 5-8 Big Ten) the loss.

Jahmir Young scored a game-high 26 points. He knocked down 4-of-6 three-pointers and added seven rebounds and four assists in an all-around performance. Young continued his tremendous play on the road, averaging 28.6 over his last seven games away from home.

Donta Scott added 19 points on 5-8 shooting, including 2-4 from beyond the arch. He also grabbed seven rebounds.

Julian Reese posted his 12th double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds. He trails only Purdue's Zach Edey for most double-doubles in the conference.

In his first career start in a Maryland uniform, Mady Traore posted career highs with eight points and five rebounds in 20 minutes of action. He had previously received in-game action in only seven games this season.
The Terps have played in multiple overtime games for the first time since the 2013-14 season. This also marked the first time Maryland played a double-overtime game since winning at Northwestern 95-87 on Jan. 12, 2022.

Ohio State (14-10, 4-9) was led by Bruce Thornton with 24 points.

Breaking Down the Action

  • Four early points from Julian Reese helped the Terps push to an 8-4 lead at the under-16 timeout.
  • Donta Scott would key the offense later in the first half, as he would score 10 points to help the Terps to a 28-18 lead with 7:31 remaining.
  • Ohio State would go on a mini-run, but baskets by Scott and Mady Traore would keep the Terps ahead 32-26 at the final media timeout of the first half.
  • Ohio State would close the half scoring seven unanswered points, taking a 33-32 lead into the half.
  • A three-pointer from Jahmir Young and an alley-oop to Traore helped the Terps even the game at 37 apiece at the first media timeout of the second half.
  • The game would remain tightly contested, but a basket by Young would give the Terps a 41-40 lead midway through the second half.
  • Scott and Young would both bury shots from beyond the arc, as Maryland would take a 55-49 advantage with 7:33 left in the game.
  • Young and Scott would continue to lead the charge for the Terps, as they held on to a 60-56 lead with 4:12 remaining in the game.
  • Ohio State tied the game at 61-61 as Thornton knocked down a three-pointer with 51.4 seconds left in the second half. The Terps had led for the previous 11 minutes before that triple. Young had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, but his jumper didn't go down.
  • In overtime, Deshawn Harris-Smith knocked down a three-pointer, his first points of the game to put the Terps up 66-65 with 3:31 left in the extra session. But Ohio State's Jamison Battle answered to put the Buckeyes ahead 67-66.
  • Young would knock four consecutive free throws to give the Terps a 70-67 lead with just under 2 minutes to go in the first overtime. Thornton would come back on the other end and hit a floater in the middle of the lane to cut it to a one-point game.
  • Both teams had chances to win the game at the end of the first overtime,  but Battle and Young missed shots in the final 10 seconds.
  • Young finished through contact at the rim to give the Terps the lead, but a put-back layup by Ohio State's Zed Key would tie the game again at 75-75.
Coach Willard's Take
"There was great effort from the guys on the floor in the last 15, really almost 20 minutes including overtime. We had our chances. We missed some free throws and we had a couple of shots at the end that didn't fall down. You have to give Ohio State credit, they made some tough shots at the end and we have to come up with a way to get stops. Northwestern was able to do it to us and now Ohio State did it to us. Sometimes we just let a little bit of our offensive struggles slip into the other end. It was an unbelievable effort from the team. We were just a free throw here or a shot away from being able to come out with the win".

Double-Figure Factors
  • Jahmir Young (26 points) dropped double-figures for the 128th time in his career and the 22nd time in 23 games he's played this season. It's also the 19th game in a row that he's played and scored double-digits. Young scored 20-plus points for the 13th time this season and the 54th time in his career - the most among all active Big Ten players.
