Maryland Rallies But Falls Short Against CSUN, 5-3

Box Score LOS ANGELES -- After falling behind early, Maryland softball rallied to tie Cal State Northridge, but the Terps were outlasted, 5-3, on Saturday.  

The Terps fell behind 3-0 early before tying the game up later in the fourth inning. Jaeda McFarland, Megan Mikami and Gracelyn Solarz recorded RBI singles in the inning. However, CSUN responded with a two-run home run to regain the lead. 

Maryland had one last chance to tie the game or take the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Diamond Williams hit a double with two outs to keep the Terps alive, but CSUN held on for the win. Williams went 2-4 during the contest. 

Maryland had seven hits in the contest, all but one came from different batters. 

Genevieve Ebaugh entered the game as relief for starting pitcher Keira Bucher. It was Ebaugh's first game as a Terp after missing her entire freshman season due to injury. She pitched 5.1 innings and struck out seven batters while allowing only three hits.  

CSUN improved to 3-1 on the season.


Breaking Down The Action
  • Sammi Woods recorded all three outs to begin the game, including a double play on a diving catch where she caught a baserunner at second base. CSUN then struck first in the next inning with a single up the middle that scored three runs with bases loaded. 
  • In the bottom of the fourth, CSUN made a pitching change with the bases loaded and one out. Gracelyn Solarz singled up the middle to score the first run of the game for the Terps. Megan Mikami then recorded a sacrifice fly and Jaeda McFarland singled to the right side to allow Bailey Murphy to score to tie the game at 3-3.
  • CSUN responded with a two-run home run to take a 5-3 lead in the top of the fifth.  
  • Genevieve struck out two batters to head into the bottom of the seventh inning with a chance to tie the game or take the lead for the Terps. 
  • Diamond Williams ripped a shot to the left field wall for a double as the Terps had a runner in scoring position with two outs. However, CSUN held on for the win.
