Williams Homers Again, Terps Drop 4-1 Decision

Box Score HAMMOND, LAAfter Diamond Williams homered for the second game in a row, but Maryland suffered a heartbreaking 4-1 loss against host Southeastern Louisiana in the Lion Classic. 

Maryland's Courtney Wyche and Southeastern Louisiana's Cera Blanchard engaged in a pitcher's duel with the Lions (7-1) outlasting the Terps (3-6). Wyche pitched a six-inning complete game. She allowed just three hits while striking out nine. It was the 36th complete game of her career. 

Williams blasted a game-tying home run in the top of the sixth inning to even the game at 1-1. But Southeastern regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. 

Megan Mikami and Jaeda McFarland had the Terps' other hits along with Williams' homer. 


Breaking Down The Action
  • Southeastern jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Lexi Johnson solo home run in the second inning. After the homer, Wyche struck out three Lions to escape the inning without any further damage. 
  • Williams tied the game with a solo blast to left field in the top of the sixth with one out to make it 1-1. 
  • Right after the Terps took the lead, the Lions answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth as Ka'Lyn Watson scored on an error. They tacked on another run on a throwing error for a 3-1 lead. Maddie Watson drove in the third run of the inning, making it 4-1.

  • Courtney Wyche struck out nine batters on Saturday to increase her career total to 453, which is sixth all-time. She passed Kaitlyn Schmeiser (2012-15) and is 40 away from passing Monica Cyphert (2001-04) for fifth all-time. 
  • Wyche is also seventh on the all-time innings pitched list. She has pitched 478 innings and is 40.1 innings from passing Monica Cyphert (2001-04). 
  • Wyche pitched her 36th complete game of her career. She's four away from passing Kerry Hickey (2008-11) for sixth all-time.

  • 3: Williams leads the Terps with three home runs. 
  • 5: Williams now has a five-game hitting streak. She has hits in eight of nine games this season. 
  • 22: Williams now has 22 career homers with three this season, her first as a Terp.
