Box Score DELAND, FL – Maryland Softball was defeated by Long Island University, 3-0, on Saturday in game three of the Stetson Invitational.
Despite Courtney Wyche's dominant relief effort, in which she held LIU (6-7) scoreless for the final four innings, the Terps (4-8) couldn't get things going on offense.
Jaeda McFarland kept hopes of a Maryland comeback alive on defense by completing multiple run-saving throws to home. McFarland also tallied one hit, along with Delaney Williams,
Sydney Lewis,
Sammi Woods, and
Mazie MacFarlane.
Julia Shearer pitched the first three innings for the Terps before being replaced by the graduate ace Wyche. Wyche spun four strikeouts and retired nine out of the 11 LIU batters she faced.
Breaking Down The Action
- With the bases loaded in the first, Jadea McFarland made a long throw from center field to catch an LIU runner out at home. But the Sharks' next batter hit an RBI single for the first score. LIU hit a solo home run in the following inning.
- The Sharks added another score off an RBI single in the bottom of the third. A diving catch by Mazie MacFarlane in deep right and another McFarland throw to home prevented additional LIU runs in the inning.
- McFarland looked to energize Maryland's offense in the next frame with a leadoff single. Diamond Williams followed with a single and Sydney Lewis walked, but the Terps couldn't convert with the bases loaded.
- Wyche took over in the circle in the fourth and proceeded to strike out two of the four LIU batters she faced.

- Courtney Wyche struck out four batters in the game to increase her career total to 457, which is sixth all-time. She's 35 strikeouts away from passing Monica Cyphert (2001-04) for fifth all-time.
- Wyche is also seventh on the all-time innings pitched list. She has pitched 480 innings and is 39.1 innings from passing Monica Cyphert (2001-04).
