Maryland Suffers Heartbreaking 8-6 Loss To No. 4 Washington

Box Score SEATTLE – After leading for the entire game, the Maryland softball team suffered a heartbreaking 8-6 loss at No. 4 Washington on Friday afternoon. The Terps scored six runs in the top of the first inning and led all the way until Washington scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh to stun the Terps.

Maryland (5-11) was seeking its fourth ever win over a Top-5 opponent, sixth ever win against a Top-10 foe and 37th all-time win over a ranked team.

Down 6-2 entering the bottom of the seventh, Washington (14-2) rallied with a lead-off home run by Jillian Celis followed by five of the next six Huskies reaching base with Olivia Johnson hitting a grand slam to win the game.

Maryland broke open the game early as Sydney Lewis smashed a grand slam in the first inning as the Terps batted around.

Megan Mikami and Jaeda McFarland also drove in runs in the first inning. McFarland went 2-for-3 and Mikami went 1-for-3. Michaela Jones, Delaney Reefe and Diamond Williams had the Terps' other hits.

Bri Godfrey started for the Terps and was very effective over the first six innings as she scattered eight hits, allowing four runs.

Breaking Down The Action
  • Megan Mikami and Jaeda McFarland singled, and Diamond Williams walked to load the bases. Sydney Lewis then belted the Terps' second grand slam of the season to take a 4-0 lead. The Terps loaded the bases once again and Mikami and McFarland drew walks that scored another two runs. The Terps led 6-0 after the top of the first.
  • Washington loaded the bases, and a walk scored one run. Bri Godfrey then got out of the jam with a strikeout and lineout with the Terps still leading 6-1 after two innings.
  • Sydney Stewart smashed a solo home run to center field to cut into the Terps lead making it 6-2. However, Godfrey finished the inning strong with a popout and groundout.
  • Washington threatened again in the fifth inning by loading the bases, but Godfrey induced a foul out to escape the frame without any runs scored.
  • The Huskies scored six runs in the seventh inning and a grand slam ended the game on a walk-off. Maryland lost 8-6.
In The Record Books
  • Jaeda McFarland is fourth in school history in stolen bases with 56 and is only five from passing Jenny Belak (2005-08) and claiming third place on Maryland's all-time list.
