Maryland Throws One-Hitter To Open Karn Era With 4-0 Win Over San Diego

Box Score LOS ANGELES -- In her first start in a Maryland uniform, Bri Godfrey pitched the first six innings and Julia Shearer closed the game to start the Lauren Karn Era of Terrapin softball with a bang as the Terps beat San Diego, 4-0. Godfrey carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning.

Godfrey, a sophomore who transferred to Maryland from Marshall, went the distance striking out three while throwing 73 pitches, allowing just one hit and two walks. She gave up an infield single with one out in the sixth. Shearer struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.

Friday's opener is the first of five games for the Terps in Los Angeles to open the Stacy Winsberg Tournament. San Diego was the first of four different opponents Maryland is set to play over three days of competition. The Terps play host No. 10 UCLA later in the day at 6 p.m. ET.

In her first game as a Terp, catcher Delaney Reefe went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Another new Terp Diamond Williams drove in two runs in the win with a two-run single to right field in the second inning. Maryland added two more runs in the sixth inning with a bases-loaded walk and another newcomer, Mazie MacFarlane driving home Madison Runyan with a single to left. Runyan had two runs scored.
