Williams’ and Shearer’s Big Days Not Enough, Terps Lose 5-3

Box Score COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland softball was defeated by Bryant, 5-3, on Saturday at Maryland Softball Stadium despite strong performances from Diamond Williams at the plate and Julia Shearer in the circle. The game was the Terps' second as the host of the Maryland Softball Tournament.
Maryland (10-14) held Bryant to only one run in the final six frames after giving up four runs in the first inning. The Terps also held Bryant scoreless for the final four innings.

Freshman pitcher Julia Shearer was the main catalyst in Maryland's defensive effort. She took over in the circle in the third and pitched the remaining four innings while surrendering one hit and zero runs.

But Maryland couldn't get the bats going in the later innings, despite Williams' best efforts on offense. Williams finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and one run scored, including her two-run blast in the first inning.
Megan Mikami doubled and scored two runs for the Terps. She added a stolen base to give her 70 in her career, which is a program record. Jaeda McFarland also had an extra-base hit in the game, increasing her career triple tally and Maryland's program record to 18 triples.

Bryant (11-6) advanced to 3-0 in the tournament.
Breaking Down The Action

  • Megan Mikami immediately responded with a leadoff double and was driven in by Diamond Williams' two-run shot to center. Bryant's lead was cut to 4-2 going into the second inning.
  • Bri Godfrey made quick work of the Bulldogs in the second, helped by a heads-up third out play from catcher Delaney Reefe that caught a Bryant runner attempting to steal second.
  • In the third inning, Sammi Woods connected with Hannah Runk to catch out a Bryant runner at second, but a Bulldog player scored on the fielder's choice.
  • Mikami reached first on a hit-by-pitch and stole second to lead off the bottom of the third before touching home thanks to a Williams' RBI single.
  • Julia Shearer and the Terps defense retired three-straight Bulldogs batters in the fourth. Maryland delivered another one-two-three inning in the top of the fifth.
  • McFarland hit a triple in the fifth in hopes of an offensive rally, but the Terps weren't able to convert any runs, holding the score at 5-3 going into the sixth.
  • Shearer spun back-to-back strikeouts in the top of the seventh.
