Maryland Edged By Northwestern In Series Finale, 2-1

EVANSTON, IL – Maryland softball narrowly lost game three of its series against Northwestern, 2-1, at Sharon J. Drysdale Field on Sunday. 

Maryland is now 17-24 overall and 4-10 in Big Ten play. Northwestern improved to 26-8 and 12-1 in the conference. 

Courtney Wyche made her second appearance of the series in the circle. The fifth-year pitcher kept the Terps in the game by stranding 10 Wildcats on base and regularly working out of tight jams. She pitched her 15th complete game of the season and struck out nine batters while allowing just two hits. 

Michaela Jones drove in the lone run for the Terps. Her double in the fourth inning brought home Caitlyn Cornwell.  

Jaeda McFarland went 2-for-3 in the game and finished the series 6-for-10 with a .600 batting average. 


Breaking Down The Action
  • Northwestern took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a two-RBI double to deep center field by Hannah Cady. 
  • Courtney Wyche escaped a no-out bases-loaded jam in the second inning by popping out two Northwestern batters and striking out the other. 
  • Michaela Jones got the Terps on the board in the top of the fourth with an RBI double. Maryland trailed 2-1.

  • Wyche pitched the 48th complete game of her career, which is tied for fifth all-time with Tisha Killian (1996-98).
