COLLEGE PARK, MD – Head coach
Lauren Karn has announced the Maryland softball program's 2025 schedule.
Karn will head into her second season as Head Coach of the Terps. In Karn's first year with the program the Terps were able to earn two ranked wins over No. 25 Oregon and No. 22 Penn State. The Terps will play 14 games against seven teams that participated in the 2024 NCAA Tournament, including big time series against new Big Ten member UCLA and the University of Texas—both College World Series participants.
The 2025 season marks the 30th in Maryland softball history. It kicks off with the 20th annual Kajikawa Classic at Arizona State's Farrington Stadium from Feb. 6-9. Opening Night will see Arizona State hosting Maryland to open the tournament, with additional matchups against California, Miami (Ohio), and Utah for the Terps.
Maryland's early schedule includes tournaments at the University of Texas (Feb. 14-16), the University of North Carolina (Feb. 20-22), and Georgia Southern (Mar. 7-9). The Terps will open their home season with back-to-back games against Saint Joseph's (Mar. 4) and Howard (Mar. 5).
Big Ten play begins on the road with a three-game series at Rutgers in Piscataway. Maryland will host its first Big Ten home series against UCLA from Mar. 28-30. The Bruins, who posted a 43-12 record in 2024, won the Pac-12 regular-season and tournament titles before reaching the Women's College World Series under head coach Kelly Inouye-Perez.
The Terps are coming off a first-round victory over Penn State in the 2024 Big Ten Tournament, marking their second-ever postseason tournament win. Maryland will return two All-Big Ten Second Team players, Sydney Lewis and Mazie MacFarlane.
MacFarlane, a key addition from Utah State, made an immediate impact after missing the 2023 season due to injury. Starting in 51 of 52 games, she finished second on the team in batting average (.340) and recorded 48 hits, eight RBIs, and a .358 average against Big Ten opponents. Notable performances included a two-home-run, five-RBI game against James Madison, featuring a grand slam.
Lewis, a sophomore from Prosper, Texas, led Maryland in RBIs (41) and started all 52 games as the designated player. She made significant strides from her freshman year, posting career highs in doubles, RBIs, and home runs, while hitting .295 overall and .358 in conference play.
The Terps also welcome six newcomers, including five freshmen and Auburn transfer Mariah Penta. Penta appeared in 34 games for Auburn, starting 23 as a designated player, with a .207 batting average, 15 RBIs, four doubles, and three home runs.
The Big Ten Conference Tournament will be held at Purdue's Bittinger Stadium in West Lafayette, Indiana, from May 7-10.
All exhibitions at the Maryland Softball Stadium are free and open to the public.
