No. 5 Terps Host No.11 Michigan In Sunday Showdown

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland will host Michigan (5-2) on Sunday, March 16, at 11 a.m. at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. Maryland will host No. 11 Michigan after starting the season 5-1. The Terps defeated Penn State 19-11 on Thursday to open up conference play. 

Schedule Update:
The University of Maryland women's lacrosse team's game against Michigan at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex, originally scheduled for Sunday, March 16 at 1 PM, has been moved up to an 11 AM start time due to forecasted weather conditions.

 
Where We've Been
  • The Terrapins are 5-1 on the season heading into a home match up with No. 11 Michigan. After dropping its season opener to then-No. 6 Syracuse (15-9, Feb. 15), Maryland responded with five. straight wins over Georgetown (9-7, Feb. 18) Saint Joseph's (18-7, Feb. 22) Denver (14-10, Mar. 1), No.13 JMU (11-5, Mar. 8) and Penn State (19-11, Mar. 13).
  • Junior Kori Edmondson is the catalyst for the Terrapins offense and leads the team with 24 points and 18 goals on the season. Grad student Chrissy Thomas leads the team with 13 assists which is eighth in the Big Ten. Defensively, the Terps are anchored by captains Kennedy Major and Neve O'Ferrall
  • Kori Edmondson has been named the Big Ten Midfielder of the Week for the second consecutive week, as announced by the conference on Tuesday. Sophomore JJ Suriano also received conference recognition, earning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors.
    Edmondson was named the Big Ten Midfielder of the Week for the third time in her career. She recorded three goals, an assist, two ground balls, and two caused turnovers as No. 5 Maryland topped No. 13 James Madison 11-5.
  • JJ Suriano posted 13 saves and a 72.2 save percentage as the Terps scored an 11-5 victory at No. 13 James Madison. She earned her first Defensive Player of the Week accolade.
Series history vs. Michigan
  • This marks the 12th meeting between Maryland and Michigan. The Terps have historically controlled the series, leading a perfect 11-0 over the past 10 years. The two teams first met in 2015, with Maryland earning a 14-9 victory.
  • Kate Sites is the only current Terp who recorded a goal against Michigan last season. In 2024, Sites scored one goal to help the Terps beat Michigan 8-6 in Ann Arbor.
     
Scouting The wolverines
  • Michigan will head to College Park to open conference play after starting the season 5-2. This season they have wins over No. 12 Penn and Colorado.
  • Offensively, Jill Smith leads the way for the Wolverines, leading the team in goals (19) and points (31). Kelly MacKinney is the top facilitatory on the offense as her 17 assists rank third in the Big Ten.
  • In goal, Erin O'Grady anchors the Wolverines defense. Currently this season she has a 7.86 GAA and a .573 save percentage.

  • With three assists in the 2025 season opener, Chrissy Thomas became just the 66th player in Maryland women's lacrosse history to reach the 100-point mark for her career. Thomas currently has 117 points which ranks her 59th on the all-time list.

Hall Call
  • On February 14, the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) announced the 2025 IWLCA Hall of Fame, which included Maryland head coach Cathy Reese.
  • Reese has guided Maryland to five national championships (2010, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019), 11 Final Fours, and 20 regular-season and tournament championships across the ACC and Big Ten. She is recognized as a four-time IWLCA National Coach of the Year (2010, 2014, 2015, 2019) and a 12-time conference coach of the year.
  • Reese joins former Maryland head coaches Cindy Timchal (Class of 2017) and Suzanne Tyler (Class of 2018) in the IWLCA Hall of Fame.

  • Reese is the fifth all-time winningest active head coach and the sixth-winningest coach of all-time in Division 1 women's lacrosse at 364-77 (.825). Former Maryland head coach Cindy Timchal is the all-time winningest women's lacrosse coach with 580 wins.
