Maryland to Host Alabama in Round of 32 Monday

COLLEGE PARK, MD --  The No. 4-seeded Maryland (24-7) women's basketball team will host No. 5-seeded Alabama (24-8) Monday in the NCAA Second Round at XFINITY Center. The Terps and the Crimson Tide will tip off at 5 p.m. ET on ESPN2. The Terrapins are in the Birmingham 2 Region. For tickets, click here.

For Monday, parking will be available in lots 9B, 4B, 11B and the Terrapin Trail Garage on a first come, first served basis. Additional parking will be available in the Regents Drive Garage and the XFINITY Visitors Lot, which are both metered. What's UP

  • The Terrapins earned their 15th straight NCAA Tournament bid, dating back to 2011. This is the Terrapins' 21st NCAA bid under Frese in her 23 seasons in College Park.

  • Shyanne Sellers was named to the All-Big Ten First Team for the third straight season. Kaylene Smikle was named to the First Team by the media and second team by the league's head coaches. Bri McDaniel earned Honorable Mention honors from the media and Sarah Te-Biasu earned a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
  • The Terps have five wins over ranked teams this year and 10 wins over teams in the top 50 of the NET Rankings. Maryland went 10-1 on the road and has seven Quad 1 wins this year.
  • Sellers is currently No. 12 on Maryland's all-time scoring list with 1,638 career points. She needs 42 points to pass Christy Winters Scott (1,679) at No. 11. Sellers' 517 career assists are No. 3 in the Maryland career record book. She is behind just Debbie Lytle (583) and Kristi Toliver (751). She is the first player in program history with 1,500 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists.
  • Sellers' career free throw percentage of 82.6% is No. 2 in Maryland history, behind just Kristi Toliver (86.6%). Bri McDaniel's career percentage of 78.5% is No. 10.
  • Maryland is currently No. 10 in the country and No. 2 in the Big Ten in rebounding margin (+8.6). The Terrapins lead the Big Ten and are No. 2 in the country in free throws made per game (17.16). They lead the Big Ten and are No. 7 nationally in free throw attempts (22.45). The Terps are No. 12 nationally in scoring (80.0). 
  • Maryland women's basketball is in its 54th season and owns a record of 1,150-470 (.709). The Terrapins are No. 11 all-time in NCAA Division I history in winning percentage and No. 9 in all-time victories. 
  • Maryland was picked to finish fourth in the 18-team Big Ten Conference by both the league's head coaches and media panel. The Terrapins were behind just USC, UCLA and Ohio State and Indiana was picked to finish fifth.

  • Sellers was named to the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Watch List for the nation's top shooting guard. Poffenbarger was named to the Cheryl Miller Award Watch List for the nation's top small forward.

Frese File
  • Head coach Brenda Frese is in her 23rd season in College Park. She's led the Terrapins to a record of 606-168 (.783), 14 conference titles, 21 NCAA Tournament bids in 23 postseasons, three Final Fours, seven Elite Eights, 11 Sweet Sixteens and the 2006 NCAA Championship. 
  • Frese owns a career record of 663-198 (.770) over her 26 years as a head coach.
  • Frese was named National Coach of the Year by the AP, The Athletic and ESPN at the end of the 2020-21 season. In October 2021, Frese was the first woman inducted into the Washington DC Metro Basketball Hall of Fame.
  • With the Terrapins' win at Nebraska on Feb. 14, 2021, Frese picked up win No. 500 at Maryland, which makes her the winningest coach in Maryland basketball history. Hall of Fame women's basketball head coach Chris Weller won 499 games in her 27 seasons (1975-02).
