Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Lynnsy Jones matched a career-high with 16 kills on Friday evening to lead the Maryland volleyball team to a three-game shutout of local rival George Washington in the opening round of the Maryland Invitational. The Terps dispatched the Colonials 30-27, 30-22 and 30-24 in the nightcap at Ritchie Coliseum, after UMBC won a four-game thriller over Binghamton in an opening match, 30-26, 27-30, 30-17, 36-34.

The tournament's opening match saw UMBC trade games and even points during a two-hour match that ended with the Retrievers storming from behind to win the decisive game 36-34. Christine Skala led UMBC with 19 kills. Michele Heck had 12 for the Bearcats.

Maryland, however, controlled its match from the outset as the Terps out-hit and out-blocked their D.C.-area visitors. Maryland used a balanced attack to hit better than .300 for the match, with senior Carey Brennan posting 13 kills to join Jones in double figures. Jones' 16 kills were a career-best for a three-game match, matching the 16 kills she recorded last season in a five-game win over Florida State.

The Terrapins had nine service aces on the night and eight blocks, doubling the Colonials in both categories. GW's Sarah Hokom led her team with 12 kills.

The two-day, round-robin tournament continues on Saturday with Maryland hosting Binghamton at 11 a.m., followed by George Washington against UMBC in the early session. The Colonials battle Binghamton at 5, followed by the tournament finale between Maryland and UMBC at 7.

The tournament marks the season-opening games for all four schools.
