Maryland Upsets Virginia 3-2 In Volleyball

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Maryland volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat the University of Virginia 3-2 (15-7, 12-15, 13-15, 15-13, 18-16) in the Cavaliers' final home match of the season Friday evening at University Hall. The loss to the Terps, snaps Virginia's four-match winning streak over Maryland. UVa falls to 15-8 overall and 8-6 in the ACC, while the Terrapins improve to 12-16 overall and 5-9 in the conference. Maryland set a school record by registering 36 team block assists in the match. Junior outside hitter Maren Stuart led Maryland with 12 block assists and also added a team-high 18 kills.

Maryland opened the match with a 15-7 win in game one, but Virginia came back to win the next two games for a 2-1 lead. The 'Hoos won game two 15-12 and took the third game 15-13. In game three, third-year outside hitter Andrea Fischer (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) served eight-straight points to turn a 13-6 deficit into a 14-13 Virginia advantage. In the fourth game, the Cavaliers led 6-3 and 10-6, but Maryland rebounded to tie the match at 11-11. With UVa leading 13-12, the Terrapins scored the final three points for a 15-13 triumph. The fifth and deciding game was tied nine times, including 16-16 before Maryland pulled out the win, 18-16.

Third-year middle blocker Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission) led all players with 20 kills and she also added 15 digs. In their final home match of their careers, Virginia's three fourth years also turned in impressive performances. Fourth-year middle blocker and 1998 first-team All-ACC selection Jessica Parsons (Green Oaks, Ill./Libertyville) totaled 18 kills, 12 digs, and three block assists. Fourth-year setter Mary Frances Scott (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) also recorded a double-double with a match-high 53 assists and 14 digs, along with three block assists. With the 53 assists, Scott has now handed out 5,701 career assists and has moved into 23rd place on the all-time NCAA Division I assist list. Fourth-year outside hitter Whitney Bilger (La Jolla, Calif./The Bishops School) notched team-highs of 17 digs and four service aces. Fischer also had an impressive performance with 17 kills, four digs and three block assists.

In addition to Stuart, the Terrapins also received outstanding performances from freshman Carey Brennan and junior outside hitter Nnenna Amobi. Brennan totaled 14 kills, 15 digs, three block assists and two service aces, while Amobi tallied 13 kills and six block assists. Senior outside hitter Beth Murphy added 10 kills, 14 digs and seven block assists.
