COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Terence Morris had 34 points and 20 rebounds, and
Maryland rallied from an 11-point deficit in the second half to defeat the
California All-Stars 105-98 Tuesday night.
Lonny Baxter scored 20 points for the Terrapins, who won both their
exhibition games this month. Maryland opens its season next Wednesday at home
against San Francisco in the first round of the Preseason NIT.
Morris, an honorable mention All-American last season, went 13-for-17 from
the floor and 7-for-9 at the foul line.
Maryland trailed 64-53 early in the second half and 91-85 with 7:05 to go
before coming back. A 3-pointer by Danny Miller with 4:28 left gave the
Terrapins their first lead (95-92) since well before halftime.
The All-Stars, who played in Marquette one night earlier, went nearly six
minutes without a basket down the stretch.
Dylan Rigdon scored 24 points and Matt Tuck had 20 off the bench for the
All-Stars, who previously lost to Syracuse, Massachusetts, Kansas and
Marquette. Their only win was at Kansas State.
The All-Stars led by 11 before Morris made a three-point play and Baxter
scored four points in a 9-0 run that got the Terrapins to 64-62. It was 72-64
before Morris hit a dunk and Mike Mardesich scored two baskets in a 6-0 spree
that made it 72-70 with 12:53 left.
Maryland finally pulled even at 81-81, but the All-Stars used a 5-0 spurt to
force the Terrapins to mount another comeback.
Morris had 19 points and 10 rebounds in the first half, but Rigdon also had
19 points to help the All-Stars take a 54-48 lead.
After Morris scored seven consecutive points to put Maryland up 18-11,
Rigdon made two three-point plays and a layup in a 13-2 run that put the
All-Stars back in front.
Although the Terrapins responded with seven straight points, the All-Stars
eventually took a 36-34 lead. Morris then hit a three-point play and a layup to
spark another 7-0 spree, but Rigdon scored 11 points in a 14-5 surge at the end
of the half.
