Wrestling Posts Largest Win Since 1997

Dec. 11, 1999

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland wrestling team posted its largest margin of victory since Feb. 21, 1997 with a commanding 40-6 win over Coppin State at Ritchie Coliseum. The win was also Maryland's first time breaking the 40-point mark since the 41-7 win against Howard. The Terps used senior experience and three Coppin forfeits to reach the plateau.

At 133 pounds, sophomore ACC Champion Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.) had a 14-3 decision over Kevin Jeffress to give the Terps a 10-0 team start. York, ranked No. 15 by Amateur Wrestling News Magazine, improves his individual record on the season to 14-1. He has placed in all three tournaments that he has entered, including winning two titles.

After the Terps lost two consecutive matches at 149 and 157, senior co-captain Grant Newman (Chesapeake City, Md.), appearing in his first career dual match, decisioned Darron Mason, 5-1, at 165 pounds. The other co-captain, senior Mike Tomaino (Allenhurst, N.J.) followed by dominating Vincent Harris to earn a technical fall, 17-1. The back-to-back wins ignited the Terps, increasing the Maryland lead to 18 points.

Freshman Joe Mormile (Toms River, N.J.), at 184, debuted with a pin of Tim Turner 53 seconds into the match. Mormile was a high school state champion and an honorable mention All-America selection.

Another freshman, Bob Vorhies (Morris Knolls, N.J.), completed the dual meet with a major decision of Jason Wood, 15-4, at 197.

The Eagles forfeited at 125, 141 and heavyweight.

Maryland improves to 1-0 on the season as Coppin falls to 0-1. The Terps will not wrestle again until Dec. 28 at the Wilkes Open. The next dual is slated for Jan. 11 at Navy beginning at 7:00 p.m.
