Women's Tennis Falls to WFU in Regular Season Finale

April 18, 1999

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Junior Stacy Walkowitz (Coral Springs, Fla.) was the only winner for Maryland, as Wake Forest clinched the win in singles for the 5-1 victory on the Cole Field House Tennis Courts. No doubles matches were played.

Maryland looked as if it would give the No. 19 Demon Deacons a tough match in the beginning as half of the singles matches were benefiting each team. At No. 1, senior Meg Griffin (Topeka, Kan.) tied up her match against the No. 10 player in the nation, Mariel Verban, after two sets, but Verban pulled out a 6-3 decision in the third.

Wake's No. 2 player Janet Bergman, who is ranked 33rd, handled junior Lorraine Bittles (Nashville, Tenn.) by a score of 6-2, 7-5.

At. No. 3, Walkowitz defeated Maren Haus in straight sets to improve her record this season to 13-6.

Wake Forest swept the remaining three matches as Jackie Houston, Annemarie Milton and Lea Miller were all winners.

Maryland falls to 13-6 on the season and 4-4 in the ACC as Wake improves to 13-9 and 7-1 in the ACC. Both teams are off until April 22, when they travel to the ACC Championships in Atlanta, Ga.
