Terps Sweep Princeton in Softball

May 8, 1999

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior Kelly Shipman hit two home runs, gained her 1000th career strikeout and won her school-record 28th game as Maryland swept a college softball doubleheader from Princeton this afternoon. The Terps won the first game, 4-3, and earned a come-from-behind extra-inning 3-2 victory in the second game.

Maryland's record is now 47-19 overall while Princeton falls to 23-28. It was the final day of competition during the regular season for both teams. The Terps begin play in the ACC Tournament as the No. 1 seed Friday night in Tallahassee, Fla.

Shipman struck out nine and allowed only three hits as Maryland won game one. During the game Shipman gained her 1000th career strikeout making her one of only eight players in NCAA history to have 1,000 or more career strikeouts. She took a no-hitter into the seventh inning as she upped her pitching record to 28-11.

Shipman hit her single-season school-record tying eighth home run in the third inning to give the Terps a 2-0 lead. Freshman first baseman Kiesha Pickeral, junior catcher Sarah Putnam and freshman third baseman Beth Radford all recorded RBI singles during the game.

Princeton climbed back into the game in the top of the seventh as sophomore catcher Vicki Siesta hit a three-run home run to bring the Tigers to within 4-3. Shipman then retired the next batter to gain the victory.

Shipman supplied more heroics in game two as she helped the Terps rally during their last two at bats. Shipman hit her single-season school-record ninth home - a two run shot - to tie the score at two in the bottom of the seventh. Maryland then won the game on an RBI double by junior third baseman Fawna Lackovic with no outs in the bottom of the eighth.

Freshman Amanda Bettker struck out eight in five innings of work to gain her 13th victory of the season. She retired 15 of the 17 batters she faced and allowed one hit. Princeton's Brianne Galicinao took a shutout into the seventh inning and suffered the loss. Her record is now 6-10.
