COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Local freshman Deedee Warley (Fort Washington, Md.), who led St. John's High School to a 30-1 record and a city championship last season, has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference women's basketball rookie of the week.
Warley scored 18 points on the road at No. 20 Penn State last Thursday, and poured in 12 points on Sunday against Wake Forest. At Penn State, she shot 8 of 14 from the field and added two assists, two rebounds and a steal. The freshman played all 40 minutes of Sunday's loss to Wake Forest while contributing four rebounds, a steal and a pair of assists.
In two games last week, the 6-foot-2 forward averaged 15 points and raised her season average to 8.6. Warley is currently third on the Terrapins in scoring, and fifth with a 4.5 rebounding average. She is averaging 26.3 minutes per game as a freshman, while starting six of the Terps' eight games. She has scored in double digits three times and averaged 12 points over the Terps' last four games.
Warley is one of six freshmen in the Maryland lineup, and one of four freshmen to average over 20 minutes per game. The Terrapins are currently 0-8 overall and 0-2 in the ACC. Maryland hosts No. 14 Rutgers next Tuesday, Dec. 22, following this week's final exams schedule.
