COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland junior midfielder Kristin Sommar (North Wales, Pa.) scored a career-high four goals and sophomore attack Jen Adams (Brighton, Australia) added three to lead the top-ranked Maryland Terrapins (3-0) to a 13-7 win against the second-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels (1-2) on Sunday afternoon at Ludwig Field.

The Tar Heels and Terps played seven minutes into the first half before North Carolina's Christine McPike recorded the first goal of the day at the 23:14 mark. Maryland would strike back three minutes later off an unassisted goal by Adams. The two teams would exchange goals before Maryland's Quinn Carney's (Flemington, N.J.) goal from sophomore Allison Comito (Glen Head, N.Y.) broke a 3-3 tie at the 8:30 mark. Sommar would net her third goal of the afternoon at the 3:13 mark to close out the half and give the Terps the narrow 5-3 advantage.

The Terps would score three consecutive goals to open the second half as Sommar, sophomore Tori Wellington (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) and Adams each scored to give the Terps an 8-3 lead. After a Carolina timeout, Tar Heel junior Gray MacNair gave the Heels their first goal of the half at the 19:21 mark off an assist from Brooke Crawford.

Maryland would embark on another mini scoring drive beginning at the 19:03 mark, outscoring the Tar Heels 4-0, including two goals by Comito, to seal the victory. North Carolina would score twice more before the clock expired.

In goal, Maryland's Alex Kahoe (Villanova, Pa.) posted 14 saves while North Carolina's Debbie Castine, playing in 46 minutes, recorded six saves and allowed nine goals. Tar Heel freshman goalkeeper Melissa Coyne played 14 minutes and totaled three saves and four goals allowed.
