CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The No. 27 University of North Carolina women's tennis team defeated No. 41 Maryland, 5-4, at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
A solid singles performance secured Carolina's victory. While UNC won five of six singles matches in straight sets, the Terrapins won all three doubles matches.
At No. 1 singles, junior Jessica Zaganczyk defeated Maryland's Meg Griffin 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Caroline Hill and junior Cena Hackler netted wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-5 and 6-3, 6-0.
Sarah Hawkins and Courtney Zalinski sealed the Tar Heel victory with straight set wins at No. 4 and No. 5. Maryland's Courtney Perkins defeated Carolina's Emi Shaffer at No. 6, 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles, Maryland's top-seeded Meg Griffin and Lorraine Bittles defeated Cena Hackler and Jessica Zaganczyk 8-6. Adrienne Pavelko and Courtney Perkins won at No. 3 doubles 8-3.
The Tar Heel victory ended Maryland's five-match winning streak. The Heels move to 13-7 overall and 3-4 in the ACC. Maryland's record moves to 11-5 overall, and 3-2 in the ACC.
The Terps take on Duke tomorrow afternoon in Durham, N.C. at 11:00 a.m.
