COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland sophomore attack Allison Comito (Glen Head, N.Y.) tied her season-best goal performance Saturday afternoon at Ludwig Field as she netted six goals to lead the No. 1-ranked Terps past the 10th-ranked Loyola Greyhounds, 17-9. Comito had previously set her career-high performance against Georgetown on April 14 where she scored six goals on six shots. Maryland improves to 18-0 overall, marking the third team in school history, and the last team since the 1996 Terp squad, to record a perfect undefeated regular-season schedule. Loyola falls to 12-4.
Maryland opened the contest scoring five consecutive goals, including back-to-back goals by sophomore attack Jen Adams (Brighton, Australia) before the Greyhounds would net their first at the 16:48 mark after Stacey Morlang took a Maria DiTommaso assisted ball and converted past Maryland keeper Alex Kahoe (Villanova, Pa.).
The Terrapin defense would prove stingy throughout most of the first half, allowing only three goals on the 'Hounds' 12 shots on goal, and Kahoe would post five of her 12 saves on the afternoon in the first half.
The Greyhounds, however, made an early second-half surge, cutting the Terps' 10-3 halftime lead to 11-8 at the 45:26 mark. Loyola's Kathleen O'Shea would chart back-to-back goals at the 31:05 and 36:34 marks to narrow the advantage. However, the Terps answered the run by scoring four straight before the Greyhounds could get another goal.
Adams' three goals this afternoon leave her two shy of breaking former Terp Kelly Amonte's single-season record of 62 goals she scored in 1996. Adams has recorded 60 goals this season, while her 41 assists to date, leave her seven shy of catching Amonte.
The Greyhounds were led by Kathleen O'Shea's three goals and one assist, while Kory Miller totaled two goals and one assist.
Maryland awaits the 1999 NCAA pairings which will be announced on Sunday, May 2, at 8 p.m. (EDT).
