Men's Soccer Midfielder Keith Beach is ACC Assist Leader

BEACH MOVES INTO SECOND PLACE ALL-TIME ON CAREER ASSIST CHART -- Maryland senior midfielder Keith Beach moved into second place all-time on Marylands career assist chart after scoring three assists in Marylands 6-1 win over UMBC last Wednesday. Beach now has 22 career assists, and is four shy of breaking the all-time record, which is held by Eberhard Klein, who has 25 career assists. Beach surpassed Shane Dougherty who posted 21 career assists.

BEACH IS ACC ASSIST LEADER -- Maryland senior midfielder Keith Beach leads the ACC in assists with four, an average of 1.00 assists per game. He also holds the ACC individual single-game high record for assists with three against UMBC last Wednesday.

VIRGINIA DOWNS MARYLAND 4-1 IN ACC OPENER -- Virginia sophomore forward Chris Albright scored two goals, one of them the game-winner as the seventh-ranked Cavaliers posted a 4-1 victory over No. 17 Maryland at Klockner Stadium on Saturday night. With four goals on the night, the Cavaliers scored more goals in the game than in their previous four contests against the Terps. It was Marylands worst ACC loss since its 5-1 loss to Clemson in 1993. Virginia opened the scoring mark at the 8:40 mark on a goal by freshman midfielder Steve Totten. Virginia improved its lead to 2-0 at 32:20 when Albright scored his first goal. Virginia would score its third goal before intermission at 42:27 off an unassisted goal by freshman forward Sheldon Barnes. The Cavaliers made it 4-0 in the second half on Albrights second goal at the 58:59 mark. The Terps avoided the shutout on an unassisted goal by Taylor Twellman at 80:53. Twellman stole the ball from a defender above the left side of the penalty box and scored from 16 yards away.

MOUNT CAPSULE -- Mount St. Marys enters Wednesdays contest sporting a 2-1-1 record ... the Mount has recorded victories against Niagara (1-0) and Towson (2-1), was defeated by Lehigh (3-2) and tied Delaware (1-1) ... junior forward Duncan Gladwin leads all Mount scoring with six points after scoring two goals and two assists ... sophomore goalkeeper Rob Ray owns a 1.20 GAA, allowing four goals in 300 minutes played.

MARYLAND HEAD COACH SASHO CIROVSKI -- Maryland head coach Sasho Cirovski is in his sixth season at the helm of the Terrapin program. He owns a 62-40-8 record with the Terps, and in his eight years of coaching, he owns an 88-52-14 record. Cirovski has guided the Terps to four consecutive NCAA Tournament second round appearances and one ACC championship. Most recently, he coached defensive standout Leo Cullen who was the first player selected in the 1998 MLS draft by the Miami Fusion.

CIROVSKI VS. THE MOUNT -- Maryland head coach Sasho Cirovski owns a 4-1 record against Mount St. Marys. The Terps last defeated the Mount on Sept. 17, 1997 by a 3-1 margin. The Mounts lone win against a Cirovski-coached team was a 2-1 decision on Oct. 6, 1994. Maryland defeated the Mount 3-1 last year after junior midfielder Judah Cooks scored two goals and then-junior midfielder Keith Beach added one.

TERP TRAVELS -- Maryland travels to NC State this Sunday for a 2 p.m. matchup with the Wolfpack.

BEACH CLOSING IN ON ALL-TIME POINTS LADDER -- Maryland senior midfielder Keith Beach is nearing the top 10 on the all-time career points ladder. Beach currently has totaled 52 career points. Former Terp Gary Furlong is ranked 10th all-time with 60 points.

TWELLMAN ON A TEAR EARLY -- Maryland freshman forward Taylor Twellman has been on a roll the last two of Marylands matches, including a career-best performance against UMBC last Wednesday night. The St. Louis, Mo. native scored a career-high two goals and added an assist in the 6-1 win against the Retrievers, and helped the Terps avoid a shutout against the seventh-ranked Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday. He scored at the 80th minute mark on an unassisted goal in the Terps 4-1 loss to the Cavaliers.

TWELLMAN AMONG ACC LEADERS -- Maryland freshman forward Taylor Twellman is ranked among the ACC leaders in points scored and in goals scored. He ranks third in points scored with seven, and is fourth in goals scored with three.

ARMAS AND MERKEL CLIMBING ASSIST LADDER
Maryland senior midfielders Steve Armas and Randy Merkel are moving up
on the career-assist ladder.  Armas moved into sole possession of fourth
place with 17 career assists.  Merkel is tied for sixth with 16 career
assists.  Eberhard Klein, who played for the Terps from 1962-1964, is
 the all-time career assist leader with 25.

TOUGH AT LUDWIG -- The Terps own a 22-8-3 record at Ludwig Field since its opening in 1995. Their best record was in 1996 where they recorded a 9-3-1 record. Six of the Terps 16 school-record-setting wins last year were at Ludwig Field.

TERPS SET LUDWIG FIELD RECORD -- In its 6-1 win over UMBC last Wednesday night, Maryland set a new Ludwig Field record for most goals scored in a match. The previous record was five goalsset against Robert Morris on Oct. 20, 1996. It marked the fourth time in head coach Sasho Cirovskis tenure that a Terp team has scored six goals in a match.

THE LIP ON LEWIS -- Maryland sophomore goalkeeper Christian Lewis is ranked fifth in the ACC in goals allowed average (1.73) and third in saves with a 3.25 per game average. He has totaled 13 saves in 364 minutes played.

TERPS FALL FROM POLLS -- For the first time since Sept. 9, 1996, Maryland has fallen out of the rankings after its 4-1 loss to Virginia last Saturday. The Terps are ranked No. 24 in Soccer News but dropped out of the NSCAA and Soccer America polls. The Terps dropped out of the polls in 1996 following an opening-season loss to George Mason, and a loss to Florida International a week later. Maryland slipped to No. 22 in the NSCAA poll after dropping a 2-1 overtime decision to Seton Hall to open the 1998 campaign.

BEACH NAMED HERMANN TROPHY FINALIST -- Maryland senior co-captain Keith Beach is one of 15 finalists for the prestigious Hermann Trophy which honors the nations top male and female collegiate soccer players. The award will be announced on Dec. 12 at the NCAA Mens Soccer Championship in Richmond, Va.

TERPS FRESHMEN TABBED NO. 1 BY USA TODAY -- Marylands 1998 freshman class was tabbed No. 1 by USA Today. The class of 10 freshmen joining Maryland head coach Sasho Cirovskis program, is, undoubtedly, the best in the nation. It includes four players, Dan Califf, Nick Downing, Beckett Hollenbach and Taylor Twellman, who were Parade All-Americans and who were ranked among the nations top 25 recruits. The four reunite with Cirovski after playing for him on the U.S. U-17 National Team where he served as an assistant coach.

2 -- Junior Jason Cropley and freshman Taylor Twellman each have scored a career-high two goals.

4 -- The Terrapins are the only NCAA Division I mens team to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament the last four consecutive years.

30 - 1998 marks the 30th anniversary of Marylands national-championship team. The Terps were named co-national champions along with Michigan State after the match ended in a 2-2 tie. Maryland meets the Spartans on Nov. 7 in observance of the national championship game.

15 - Maryland senior co-captain Keith Beach is one of 15 finalists for the prestigious Hermann Trophy, which recognizes the top male and female collegiate soccer players.

3 -- Marylands Jason Sardis and Keith Beach set a Maryland single-game record in assists, totaling three against Villanova on Oct. 18, 1997, and against UMBC on Sept. 9, 1998, respectively.

6 -- Marylands six goals scored against UMBC on Sept. 9, 1998 is a Ludwig Field record.

3 -- Maryland is ranked third in the ACC in scoring offense with 2.50 goals per game.

4 -- Maryland is ranked fourth in the ACC in shutouts with one.

5 -- The Terps are ranked fifth in the ACC in scoring defense, allowing 1.73 goal per game.
