Women Netters Win Fourth Straight

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -Playing its third ACC match in five days, the University of Maryland women's tennis team kept up its hot streak by defeating Virginia 6-3 this afternoon at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center. The win, the fourth in a row for the Terps, improved their record to 11-4 overall and 3-1 in the ACC. The Cavaliers fall to 10-6 this season and 1-3 in the ACC after losing to Maryland for the third straight time.

The match shaped up to be a tough one early. Maryland won both three-set matches as Stacy Walkowitz defeated UVa freshman Amy O'Donnell 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 at #3, and Courtney Perkins held on to defeat Kelly Weaver 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 at #6.

The Cavaliers got singles wins from Stacy Gingold and Christie Schweer. Gingold continued her torrid pace of late with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Lorraine Bittles at #2. The loss was the first for Bittles in the ACC this season. Schweer won for the 10th time in her last 12 matches with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Adrienne Pavelko at #5.

With Maryland leading 3-2, the Cavaliers had a chance to draw even, but Chrissie Terrill topped Leslie Cook 6-3, 7-6 at #4 to give Maryland a commanding lead going into doubles.

Virginia pulled closer as Weaver and Christine Kim defeated Pavelko and Perkins 8-5 at #3, but Walkowitz and Terrill clinched the match for the Terrapins with an 8-5 win over Cook and Schweer at #2.
