COLLEGE PARK, MD - Shannon Smith posted 12 kills and Casey Simpson turned in a 10-kill, 10-dig performance, leading North Carolina (10-3, 2-0 ACC) to a 15-9, 15-12, 15-6 win over Maryland (7-8, 1-1 ACC) in volleyball action Saturday afternoon at Ritchie Coliseum.
The Tar Heels jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first game, but Maryland, led by four consecutive service aces from senior outside hitter Kate Hannas (Ellicott City, Md.) tied the game up at 6-6. From there, however, North Carolina went on a 9-3 to take the first game 15-9.
In the second game, North Carolina again took a commanding lead, this time by 10-1. Maryland staged a valiant comeback, pulling to within 14-12, before the Tar Heels scored the deciding point of the game to win 15-12.
In the third game, the Tar Heels stayed in control throughout, winning 15-6 to clinch the match in three straight games.
For Maryland, senior outside hitter Beth Murphy (Golden, Colo.) posted 12 kills, Hannas converted five service aces and freshman setter Lindsay Davey (Aurora, Colo.) tallied a career-high 25 assists.
For the Tar Heels, Tori Seibert had 11 kills and Eve Rackham tallied 39 assists.
The Terps will be back in action against Virginia Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Ritchie Coliseum.
