Navy Wrestlers Sink Terps, 22-12

Jan. 11, 2000

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Maryland squad returned to dual action to face state rival Navy as the Midshipmen tallied four straight early wins to offset the late-charging Terrapins, 22-12.

After Josh Weidman (Hershey, Pa.) won the opening match at 165 pounds over James Griffin by a score of 7-2, Navy reeled off four straight victories, including a pin by Mark Newman in the final period at 174 pounds.

Navy sophomore Mike Bigrigg, at 184, responded to the pin as he jumped out to an 8-3 advantage after the first period. The wear and the tear of the match caught up with Bigrigg, but he held on posting an 11-6 advantage over Joe Mormile (Toms River, N.J.).

At 125 pounds, Matt Pandullo (Severn, Md.) closed the gap to ten points as he defeated Navy's Ryan Heineman, 4-1. The win capped off a comeback by Pandullo from a shoulder injury earlier in the year at the Penn State Open.

The Terrapins would inch closer at 133 pounds as Rob Takserras (Kings Park, N.Y.) defeated Navy's Zane Stickel (Gahanna, Ohio) by the margin of 5-4, putting Maryland within seven. Takseraas replaced ACC champion Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.), out with a minor injury, in the lineup and did not give up anything to his experienced opponent.

At 141 pounds, the match would not be determined to the final period as Navy's Mark Conley scored three points in the final period to gain the 6-3 victory over Mark Mansueto (West Chester, Pa.).

Grant Newman (Chesapeake City, Md.) posted the final Terrapin victory on the evening defeating Navy's Tom Storer (Sicklersville, N.J.), 16-11.

The Terps (1-1) open the ACC regular season on Saturday, Jan. 15, as they host North Carolina in Ritchie Coliseum beginning at 2 p.m.
