Terps Rout Coppin State 51-3

Dec. 9, 2000

Baltimore, Md. -- The Maryland wrestling team routed cross-town opponent Coppin State 51-3 today at the Coppin Center in Baltimore, Md. The Terps earned four pins on the day. Coppin State began the match at a disadvantage when it forfeited matches at 125 and 133. The Eagles also forfeited at 184 pounds and defaulted at 174 with an injury. The Eagles were never able to recover and challenge for the win.

Junior Mark Mansueto (West Chester, Pa.) came off the bench for the first bout of the day at 141. He wasted no time in earning the first fall of the day when he pinned Rashard Vance in 4:00. Redshirt-sophomore Bryan Robinovitz (Belle Mead, N.J.) won by an 8-7 decision over Jake LaSalle at 149. This match marked the closest bout of the day. Coppin State received its only win when 157-pound Sulieman Mumin, one of Coppin's top wrestlers, defeated junior Rob Booth (Atco, N.J.) in a high-scoring 17-14 decision. Booth wrestled with a shoulder injury he received in practice earlier in the week.

Junior Josh Weidman (Hershey, Pa.) pinned Vince Harris in 6:18 in the 165-pound class. This is his third pin of the season, he earned two last weekend at Penn State. At the top of the lineup, two more Maryland wrestlers pinned their opponents to seal the victory for the Terps. Sophomore Bob Vorhies (Morris Knolls, N.J.) pinned Thomas Matthews in 4:07 at 197. Heavyweight newcomer James Taylor (Pasadena, Md.), competing in his first match for Maryland, pinned Dennis Scott in 1:09. This was the fastest pin of the day. Taylor began wrestling with the team after working with the Maryland football team in the fall. The Terps will now take a two-week break before heading to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. on Dec. 28-29 to compete in the Sunshine Open. Some members of the team will travel to Wilkes Barre, Pa. to compete in the Wilkes Open on Dec. 29-30.
