COLLEGE PARK, Md. - With Maryland ahead by one point, freshman heavyweight Jeremy Duncan (Platte City, Mo.) overpowered Duke senior Alex Hunt, solidifying the Terps second-place spot in the ACC with a 20-16 win over the Blue Devils at Ritchie Coliseum.
Duncan fell behind 2-0 early in the match, but responded with a 12-2 run to seal Maryland's second conference win of the year and extend the school's five-match home win streak, dating back to Feb. 16, 1999.
Starting at 125 pounds, the Blue Devils went ahead early by a 6-0 margin after Tommy Hoang pinned freshman Matt Pandullo (Severn, Md.) late in the second period. At 133, Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.) fell behind in the first period by five points to Luke Palmisano, but rallied for a 13-12 win. York improved to 29-6 with the victory.
His win started a string of five consecutive victories by Maryland. At 141, Mark Mansueto (West Chester, Pa.) moved to 3-0 in the ACC by defeating Harry Clarke, 11-4. He previously topped North Carolina's Andrew Slack by technical fall, 23-8, and NC State's Oraefo Brown, 5-2.
At 149, senior co-captain Grant Newman (Chesapeake City, Md.) won his fifth dual match of the season with a decision against Andy Soliman, 8-2. Sophomore Rob Booth (Atco, N.J.) followed with his fourth fall by posting a 15-0 technical fall at 6:55 against Geoff Anderson.
Redshirt sophomore Josh Weidman (Hershey, Pa.), at 165, continued his domination at home with a 7-0 win against Mike Mitchell. The Blue Devils won the next two matches before Duncan stopped the slide with his emotion-filled win in the concluding heavyweight match.
Maryland improves to 4-2 overall, 2-1 in the ACC as the Blue Devils fall to 1-9-1, 0-2 in the ACC. The Terps travel to Virginia on Wednesday, Feb. 16, for their final regular season ACC match, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
