NOTRE DAME, Ind.--
The Terps ended a two-match stand at Notre Dame on Saturday falling 6-3 to 47th-ranked Illinois. Three Maryland newcomers shone in singles competition.
Freshmen Delila Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.) and Jessica Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) each captured singles wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Causevic defeated Eldina Fazlic 7-6, 6-3. Johnson then battled for a 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 win over Illinois opponent Brooke Ferney. Junior transferCatherine Valantin (Metz, France) defeated Natascha Loebnitz 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 in the No. 4 spot.
Junior Chrissie Terrill (Plano, Tex.) and senior Stacy Walkowitz (Coral Springs, Fla.) both dropped matches to Illinois. Competing in the No. 3 position, Walkowitz lost 6-1, 6-2 to Natalia Manasova. Carla Rosenberg defeated Terrill in the No. 5 spot 6-4, 7-6. Both doubles pairs were unsuccessful against Illinois. Causevic/Johnson lost 8-5 to Fazlic/Loebnitz. Simone Kung and Michelle Webb defeated Valantin/Terrill 8-2.
The Terps are back in action this weekend when they travel to Indiana on Friday to compete at 3:30 p.m. The team will face Marquette, in Bloomington, Ind., on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match.
