Mansueto Goes Undefeated In ACC As Terps Fall To Virginia, 27-10

Feb. 16, 2000

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- Maryland sophomore Mark Mansueto (West Chester, Pa.)completed an undefeated ACC season with a major decision over Virginia's Dave Takseraas, but the Terps could not overcome a 20-0 deficit, losing to the Cavaliers, 27-10, in the Terps' ACC regular season finale.

Virginia's Steve Mazzola put UVa ahead 6-0 with a pin in the 174 pound class. UVa's Ryan McGrath followed Mazzola's fall with a 14-6 major decision victory over Mark Reid (Medford, N.J.)in the 184 pound class to make it a 10-0 Virginia advantage. After two more wins, Virginia's Steve Garland, ranked No. 7 nationally, earned a 14-3 major decision win over Matt Pandullo (Severn, Md.) in the 125-pound class to give Virginia a 20-0 lead after claiming the first five consecutive matches of the evening.

> Maryland got on the scoreboard when the Terrapins won back-to-back matches at 133 lbs. and 141 lbs. Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.) topped Toby MacDonald by the score of 6-5 at 133 and Mansueto recorded his 16-6 major decision over Takseraas at 141 lbs. Takseraas is the twin brother of Maryland senior Rob Takseraas, Mansueto's daily practice partner. Mansueto earned major decisions against three of the four conference opponents to finish 4-0. He outscored his opponents 55-20.

However, the Cavaliers would go on to claim two of the last three matches after UVa's John Pozniak posted a 12-4 major decision win over Grant Newman (Chesapeake City, Md.) in the 149-pound class and Don Carlo-Clauss edged Rob Booth (Atco, N.J.) by the score of 5-3 in the 157 pound class.

Josh Weidman (Hershey, Pa.) defeated the Cavaliers' Brian Muir by the score of 4-2 in the final match of the evening at 165.

While Mansueto will likely earned a No. 1 seed at the ACC Tournament, Weidman and York, both at 3-1 in the conference, are likely at least No. 2 seeds.

With the win, Virginia improves its record to 4-5 overall, 1-1 in the ACC. The second-place Terps fall to 4-3 overall, 2-2 in the conference.

Maryland will return to action on Saturday, February 19th when the Terrapins face Old Dominion and Delaware State at 2:00 p.m.
