NORFOLK, Va.- Freshman heavyweight Jeremy Duncan (Platte City, Mo.) set the tone early with major decisions in each dual match as the Terps defeated both Delaware State, 43-0, and host Old Dominion, 21-16, within a three-hour span. The Terps did not compete against the fourth school, Howard, because they will wrestle against the Bison on Tuesday evening, Feb. 22, at Ritchie Coliseum.
The Terps opened the competition by sweeping the Hronets and posting their biggest win of the season along the way. They previously topped Coppin State, 40-6, on Dec. 11. After Mark Reid (Medford, N.J.) decisioned Rashaan Torian, 4-3 in the opening match, fellow freshman Bob Vorhies (Morris Knolls, N.J.) pinned Sam Johnson at 6:35 to give Maryland a burst from the starting gate. Duncan followed with a 10-0 major decision over Carlos Woods. At 133, senior Rob Takseraas (Kings Park, N.Y.) stepped in for ACC champion Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.) and recorded his 17th overall win of the year and became 2-0 in dual competition.
The second-half of the lineup finished off the shutout as senior co-captain Mike Tomaino (Allenhurst, N.J.) topped of the win with a 15-0 technical fall as one second remained on the clock in the match. Delaware State forfeited matches at 125 and 165 pounds.
Against Old Dominion, the Terps fell behind early with the Monarchs earning decisions in the first two matches. For the second time in the day, however, Duncan dominated his opponent and fell just short of a technical fall with a 15-1 win. At 133, a rested York (31-6) posted one of the most critcal individual wins of the dual season, earning four points for the team score as he defeated Joel Jimenez, 12-3. Sophomore Mark Mansueto (West Chester, Pa.) repeated the performance with a major decision of his own against Andy Simons, 16-8, to improve his dual record to 8-1. He also recently finished up the ACC season on Wednesday at Virginia with a perfect 4-0 record. After Old Dominion's No. 14-ranked 165-pounder Jeff Rusak earned a major decision to pull the Monarchs within two points, Josh Weidman (Hershey, Pa.) won his 24th match and second dual-clincher by topping George Sable, 11-4. Weidman also gave the Terps a stunning 21-19 win over North Carolina on Jan. 15 by defeating ACC champion Jamie Groudle.
The Terps improve to 6-3 on the season and will host Howard on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. and American on Thursday, Feb. 24, also at 7:30 p.m., in Ritchie Coliseum. With their sixth win, Maryland clinches its 15th consecutive .500-plus season under the guidance of head coach John McHugh.
