TALLAHASSEE, FLA. -
Maryland (6-15) and Florida A&M (9-18) split a doubleheader in baseball action on Tuesday at Moore-Kittles Field. Both games were seven innings.
Kevin Bailey's three-run home run proved to be the difference in the first game as the Rattlers beat the Terps 16-13. In the second game, however, Ken Beck went 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI, leading the Terps to a 7-6 win.
Beck drilled a two-out, two-run double into right field in the top of the first inning. His blast keyed a four-run inning, giving the Terps a 4-0 lead.
The Rattlers, however, came back to take a 5-4 lead. They scored twice in the bottom of the first inning and three times in the bottom of the second inning.
Daryl Whitmer tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the third inning when he scored on a throwing error. It was one of three runs that Whitmer scored in the nightcap.
Matt Swope scored on a wild pitch to give the Terps a 6-5 lead in the fourth inning. Whitmer then scored on a single by Ray Gemmill in the fifth inning to stretch the margin to 7-5.
After Florida A&M got a run back in the sixth inning, Jared Vogt came in to get the save for Maryland in the seventh inning.
John McCurdy had a career-high three hits for the Terps in the second game and Swope went 2-for-4 and scored twice. Jared Stuart struck out a career-high four batters.
In the first game, the Terps jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning, only to see Florida A&M come back with 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 10-4 lead.
Maryland came storming back to take a 12-10 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. It was then, however, that Bailey drilled his three-run home run to put Florida A&M ahead for good. With five Maryland errors in that same inning, Florida A&M jumped out to a 15-12 lead.
Florida A&M held the Terps to one run the rest of the way and added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the win.
The Terps got strong offensive efforts in the first game from Brian Patenaude, who scored a career-high five runs, and Chuck Easter, who went 3-for-4 with a career-high five RBI.
Maryland travels to Florida State for a three-game ACC series this weekend, starting Thursday at 6 p.m.
